Looks like we are now five!

Just moved to Greeneville in June, from WI. We are busy building a human house, then will build the Chicken house...only bird I have now is a Blue and Gold Macaw LOL! Looking forward to having a few chickens...my husband grew up on a farm and it has taken me over a year to finally convince him to have a few chickens if I clean their house....I've already designed one on wheels so it can help me distribute their fertilizer in my garden. Trust me the poor TN soil can use all the help I can give it! I want nice mannered girls that will get along and that will get accustomed to people.

TO BYC zoomzoom! What a nice story, sounds lovely! I can imagine how fun planning that must be. What a dream to design and build your forever home!


Look into Coronation Sussex. A little bit more expensive, but worth the price. They are very people friendly, lay wonderful large brown eggs, and are also a good dual purpose meat bird. Thank you for the pictures of your really pretty birds! I am so jealous...I want our house finished, the chicken coop finished and my bathtub installed, I HATE SHOWERS! LOL!!
Where does a person purchase these birds. My girlfriend's brother has some kind of brown chickens he said I could have some of his chicks, but they look kind of puny and my other friend has guinea hens and their eggs are too small. Thank you for any help you can send my way!

Hi!

I am not sure of your budget, but there are many great farms that are certified, sell healthy birds, and are NPIP certified. This stands for National Poultry Improvement Plan. THey test for certain diseases, and when a farm is approved that is a great start. Ask any where you want to possible buy birds from if they are. It is just like buying a puppy. There are good reputable breeders, and then there are people who cut corners, and the health of the animal does not come first.

I ordered my chicks from Meyer hatchery. They also have a great website to read about a lot of the different breeds. My birds arrived healthy and safe.

Thank you so very much, I've spent hours and hours on the Meyers site...so much to learn!
We have a couple of acres, and also vultures, so want the chickens to have good cover, my husband has had to run out a
few times and shoot off his shotgun, to keep them away from my mini-poos!

It's a common misconception that vultures eat living things. In fact, vultures only eat carrion. Dead critters.

That's good to know. Wonder what one of the vultures would do if they went to pick up one of my girls who was laying
out sunning herself, they would both be pretty surprised, I'd say! LOL!!

I feel like they would still eat it...vultures have been known to pick apart things that are mostly dead, or they thought were dead...So...I have also seen vultures nab fish that were alive. So....They do enjoy dead things, but have been known to eat things with a currently beating heart.
