Roosters mounting can grab the feathers on the back of the hen's head--or other hens, as is the case with mine.

Great thought but I don’t have a rooster and I just re-homed a bully so there’s peace in the flock.

So that’s normal? I’ve kept chickens for several years now and this is new for me. It’s starting to happen with a broody who hatch chicks last weekend. She hasn’t been with the flock for them to do this to her.

That is what I am wondering too, some of my hens have it and some do not. The ones that have it are easily caught by the rooster.

It depends on the chickens. I had a pair of hens who liked to do the thing (I don't judge) and I saw them like that often. I've also had it happen to lower-tier hens during re-structuring of their pecking order.
