Lost 1st chicken to a dog!!!!

Repeat offense or not, the dog doesn't deserve to DIE. Good grief. Does it need to be given up to owners more capable of caring for it properly? Most likely. There's no reason to take a dog who is obviously capable of being a small child's loved pet, and KILL it because of its owner's negligence. That dog could go on to a suburban or urban home where he'd do just fine. I'd say that the answer, at this point, to "do you want to kill the dog," should be, "No, but the dog does need to be surrendered to Animal Control so that I DON'T have to kill it when I replace my birds."

I'm so sorry that this happened to you, and I'm certainly not playing "blame the victim." I just think it's a shame that an innocent animal who doesn't know any better should have to pay the price for having irresponsible owners.

Is there any way that you can fence your property so that other peoples' dogs can't just casually run over onto your place?

Loose dogs are a real hot-button of mine. Nothing infuriates me more than seeing someone else's dog on MY property, especially when I go out of my way to ensure that my half-dozen canines stay HOME.

Sorry about your dog troubles. Dogs usually come back for more after they've had a taste.

Let Animal Control take the dog if the dog is still on your property when you're home.

Charge the owners what you feel is right. There are instances where people charge $50 a bird.

If it were me, I would charge $25-30 a bird and they would have to repair any damages to fences or whatever. This would let the owners know you mean business and they would take further actions to keep their pooch from eating a $25+ meal.

Depending on the dog, I could probably throw them quite a bit! And don't even get me started on cats! Those I know I can throw! Yet I would trust a dog before I trusted a cat.

We all know what cruel things you do to animals for your amusement!

It seems there is no end of these horrid dog stories. I have one, the OP has one and who knows who is next.

Dogs, they say, are Man's best friend... and it seems the canines are bent on keeping it that way. We have only domesticated them in very recent times, a fact few 'animal lovers' readily grasp.

Like the chicken, dogs have uncountable eons of development other than that which we have imposed on them. These things are still churininng away in their guts, waiting to get out. For them, the chicken is firmly accounted on the PREY side of the board.

Take note all who are, as yet, unscathed by their wild ways.

You're absolutely right, of COURSE. But that doesn't make dogs (or cats, or foxes, or even my hated, hated raccoons) inherently bad or evil. It just makes them, well, dogs. It's the owner's responsibility to ensure that dog and chicken are on separate life-paths, and never the twain shall meet.

Yes it is the owners responsibility to keep there dog under control and on their property. It is my responsibility to keep my flock safe from would be predators such as the neighbors dog. I am sorry but if that happened to me i would shoot to kill and wouldnt think twice about it. If my dog got away and killed someones pets then I would have to suffer the consciqeunces of my negiligence just as this owner will have to do.

I completely agree. I still dont blame my own dogs for The Massacre - they were just being dogs.

But the sheer number of such posts as:

"OMG! MY DOGS MURDERED MY BABIES,"

"DOGS!! AHHHHHHHGGHHHH!,"
and

"LOST MY 1ST CHICKEN TO A DOG!..."

Leads me to believe that the obvious and simple truth of the dog needs to be repeated, however redundant it may seem at times.
