Lost 2 baby chicks - HELP!

Fancychooklady - the ones that died were barely 3 weeks old. Far too young to be outside at night with no heat like the breeder had them the night before as I said in post 5.

And yes, I know they are my responsibility. Which is why I asked my breeder questions and set up based on her answers before picking them up. My only mistake was to trust someone who I thought was an expert.

I am sorry for your loss and some of the responses....Keep on this site there is so much good information. Don't beat yourself up that you took the advice of someone that one would assume would know what the hell they were doing.....don't get me started!!! Chickens are so much fun please don't let this experience ruin your future with chicks and just get as much info as you can get here and learn...take care, Mary

So sorry to hear that they died. I read 3 books cover to cover on chicken care and breeds before getting my chickens. That doesn't mean I'm doing everything right, but I do think responsible animal ownership involves reading / gathering info on care INDEPENDENT of talking to the breeder you buy from. Books, articles in magazines, websites like this...

So, what that means is that I'm glad you're on this site now. And that I hope you pick up a book on chicken care as well, so you have a reference in the future.

Thanks Traphill. Chickens are fun, even if this experience hasn't been! I have 6 adults and want to increase my flock. I thought raising chicks would be fun for the kids! Not a lot of fun was had those first few days.

But at least the surviving 3 are doing well, as are the 3 replacements I got earlier this week from a different breeder. The 7 week olds are ready for outside time, but the 4 week old pined. So now she has some new friends her own age to hang out with while they are out during the day. It's freezing here at night, so will bring them inside at night a bit longer.

I too am pretty new at raising chickens,and I have raised two flocks of chick's from one day old. Starting from indoors, In a couple of children's wading pools with good wire around them and a wooden stand with heat lamps overhead. And daily fresh water and food. And when they get big enough at about 10 weeks is when they start sleeping outside, but until then they do get to go outside and enjoy the grass in a small in closure we built for them to protect them from preditors and too much sun. And of course I kept there pool cleaned out every 3 days.
