I too am very sorry for your losses. I have been through losing my flock from my own dogs. the have electric around their necks now that operates with an in-ground fence. It is one thing when your own do that to your flock, but when someone else's comes in and destroys, that is uncalled for. So sad for you. Lucky for me though, it is a hobby and I don't have to rely on income from them.

Here is a curious question though. Here is someone who obviously hasn't got money to properly support herself and maintain her home. What the hell is she doing with dogs??? Even feeding cheap dog food? For crying out loud, that is probably why they want to eat your chickens, I am sad to say.

I honestly don't think dogs that get so worked up that they have bitten someone need to stay around. I hope they end up humanely euthanized and this "lovely" neighbor of yours never gets another dog.

If I lived closer, I would gladly give you some of my extras

BY the way, I too lost a sister, in 2005, and I miss her dearly. I probably talk to her more now though than I did when she was still with us

What i dont understand, is if your father or anyone was bit, why they would still release the dogs to the owner? There would be no 3rd strike or chance! In Ohio that would classify that dog as "viscious" and they would be considered a danger to the public, they would most certainly be put down no more questions asked....no if's ands or buts!!! Of course after the rabies testing was done!

This is a true devastation...i am very sorry for you and your loss! We had a fox family and coon move in last March, and i know all too well what this feels like... before we figured out what was specifically killing and making off with the birds, they nearly wiped me out on all my pullets that were about ready to lay anytime. I felt horrible for the surviving birds that were so scared to go to bed at night, wondering who was next. All my leghorns started roosting in trees, they were very smart...but the non flying poultry were not able to do that, and they were so scared. It is very frustrating for the owners also, when you feel there is nothing you can do...or you cant "catch" the predator. Your problem is different, you have many witnesses and proof... do your best to make sure this person goes to court and owns up to what has happened. They need to know it is their fault, their dogs did this damage, because they didnt "control" the dogs. Even if they cant afford to pay for the losses, they need to hear other people and a judge tell them how wrong this is!!! Some people have no idea that birds or poultry are of value, and just think it is an everyday animal worth nothing...and they need to be educated. Good luck with everything...and please update us with news!! Some of the other posters on here stated in some states we do have a law we are allowed to shoot and kill nuisance animals...and that is correct here in Ohio. If a dog running at large comes in your yard or farm, kills livestock/poultry, you are allowed to shoot it. We all need to be aware of our laws and rights!!! Dont assume anything.

I can't even imagine your loss. Even though I am a newbie I am already very attached to my chickens. I would not hesitate to sue them for damages. You need to do that to not only teach them a lesson, but also to be able to finally get your life back with your chickens. You deserve that! I know this may sound brutal, but my husband would have been waiting with a gun before it happened a second time.

Special thanks to fertile egg donors, I am happy to report that our flock is getting started back up with the help of my friend Diane from here in town and she's also a BYC chicken lady too!

She offered along with friend Amber to incubate some eggs for me and I picked up the first 10 chicks Monday! They're wonderful! Another BYC lady from Ga. is offering to send fertile eggs also! That will be so wonderful!

Also, one BYC member went above and beyond what any perfect stranger would be expected to do. She knows what it was and I want to thank her from the bottom of my heart ) Sending you a letter in the mail tomorrow!!

Going to invest in another bator (mine holds 7 only) and hopefully have the flock up and going, half grown and grazing by May at the NEW farm that we are living on now (we've moved to my husbands family farm, safer for the critters!!)

In Va, you can shoot the dogs I'm sure it is the same in W.Va, I'm not one for killing anything but your neighbor has no regard for your animals so what choice do you have. When my neighbors dog got my chickens, she felt bad and started locking him up. She also said she would if he did it again she would shoot him (she didn't). She does however keep him locked up most of the time now.
