lost 8 last night. 17 in 2 1/2 months.

No its a Havahart. I just think the coon is too big for the trap. I got the racoon sized one..... but this guy has had like 12 chickens in the past week and a half.... so it could be bigger or its something else. I do believe to see some racoon fur, but it was so little I could be mistaken.

I always tie my live trap securely (DH laughs at the straps going every which way) so that it can not be knocked over once the varmit is inside. It is easier to get out when it is flipped over. I just put it by a tree or other support and hook to the top and bottom of the trap. Be certain that the straps don't interfere with the trip mechanism. Good Luck! I used to love coons, now I hate them, but I still just relocate the ones I catch. My DH uses a .22.

Still baiting the trap. All is well. I think it got pretty hurt.

metal tent stakes work great to keep the trap fastened down. They like to roll the trap around and get the food thru the cage without going in if they can-that will zilch that. Good luck-you'll get him-there shouldn't have been anything in a havaheart that would make him bleed or cause much damage-he must have done that to himself while in there scraping around on something. I didn't get mine the first night-he flipped the trap and got out-they can pry that lid pretty hard. I baited with peanutbutter marshmallows the second night and got him. he was pretty big too. Good Luck!!!!!

I use tent stakes also. I put some branches over the trap too. It still sets itself. I think I just need to try a different smelling bait. Ill try the Peanut butter and marshmallow tactic. My chickens are doing good. The original 5 seem to be able to sleep better. The new little girls don't have a clue and are doing fine. My sultans are getting their head feathers... its so funny. I hope to get the pest soon. Ill set it for a week or so after the fact. Then I wont use it again until I start to see signs of attempted entry.

Got something big last night. It didn't like the cage being tied down, but it managed to rip off the back door. It must be a cheap trap, $54. oh well ill fix the back door better so it can't bend the metal.

Those coons can be pretty strong. I caught one with a can of cat food. He ate all the food and then he realized he couldn't get out. He was so mad he tore the can in half!!

For 54 dollars i would think it should do better! I payed 29 at Harbor Freight and mine has caught 6 coons , relocated 3 and dispatched 3. I was wondering if moth balls would work for coons?:
