Lost chicken--strange outcome

    I put the girls to bed and one was missing. I looked everywhere and finally decided a hawk must have taken her or some other predator. The following day there was still no sign and no feathers to indicate a struggle.
    I woke up at midnight the following night to see if the dog wanted to come in off the deck. I saw an overturned cardboard box and for some strange reason picked it up. There was my hen and 2 eggs! I don't know how she survived that long without food and water.
    I imagine she was on the deck looking around and suddenly it went dark--for 2 days!!
    It was good to see her. I guess one can't have both brains and beauty.
