Lost Heat

hey again all

I’m at day 21 with no pips, haven’t candled in 3 days. I of course am worried they are all dead.

On day 18 my incubator lost power for three hours and got down to 75 degrees before I realized what happened.

Do you think this killed all my chicks? Should I wait a few more days?

Your eggs should be fine with that power loss issue, but being cooled down like that it might delay the hatch a bit....... wait a few more days, I'm sure everything's OK.

No problem. My incubator lost heat overnight for some reason during the colder months and I only noticed it the next morning when I woke up, turned the heat back on and thought they were goners. But lo and behold the little boogers were fine and all hatched apart from one that actually pipped but died in it's shell.

Makes me feel so much better!! I hope I get at least one lil cutie

I'd expect you to get a close to normal hatch, albeit slightly delayed. Broody hens have been known to leave their nest for the last day or two for several hours at a time so in my mind, you've managed to mimic her behavior

I would not worry about the 3 hour cool down. That didn't hurt them.

Do you have a calibrated thermometer inside your incubator?

Why don't you candle one or two in a very dark room to see what's going on.
Look for the air cell drawing down... See if the air cell has gotten really big yet.

Hello!

I have a temp/humidity thermometer in there. It’s a diy incubator, first timer over here! When I candled three days ago the egg seemed very solid and I could very clearly see the air pocket.

I agree with everyone else...may delay the hatch by a half day to a day but they should hatch, unless as @Texas Kiki noted, do you have calibrated, reliable thermometers in the bator and not using the manufactures built in thermometer, which are notoriously unreliable or accurate.

It takes quite awhile for the internal temperature of the egg to drop to lethal levels.
