Lost lots of chicks....barn fire

I hope tobin123 comes back on and lets us know what happened. Someone has a guardian angel watching over them.

thank you to everyone ,i had the right bulb in there, ..i think what happened is the cats like to sleep on top of there holding pen because it stays warm up there.so i think one of them played with the cord and it fell and then it caught the hay on fire then those poor chicks.so we where blessed to get it out and every one else is fine.

sincerely sorry to hear of your loss. I will be double, no triple checking wattages and lamps and triple securing at every point. I wondered even if a bulb were to burst, if pieces of glass would be hot enough and start a fire. I agree...that even doing everything right can something go wrong.

Lamps should be tied with 2 pieces of rope to 2 different points and definitely do not rely on the clamp to keep them in place. My heat lamps are fastened by rock climbing slings (several 100lb breaking strength) but I did still have one knocked down recently. Some critter got in the coop and actually pulled the clamp out of the socket so it was still tied securely but everything important was sitting on the floor. Luckily it was not a lamp that was plugged in. I have no idea why something big enough to do that would bother with a heat lamp in the corner that was turned off.

tobin123, Sorry to hear about your babies. Glad the rest of the animals and your family are safe. That is a terrible thing to wake up to. Maybe your dog knew something was not right and got you up to investigate! Hugs. Deb
