Lost my entire flock

I’m not looking for an advice I know how it happened there is no one to blame but myself. This morning I looked out the window to do a quick head count but I didn’t see any of my chickens instead I saw something black in my coop. I quickly went outside and saw that it was a skunk. As I approached the coop it left and that’s when I realized I had lost everyone in my flock. I had a momma hen with 7 chicks (2weeks old) and 2 juvenile hens. I’m devastated I know it was completely my fault. I expanded my coop with the addition of all the new chicks. But I hadn’t placed any wire underneath the coop. I keep putting it off. I have learned my lesson at a really high price.

Oh that is just awful!!!! I’m so sad for you!

Sorry to hear about your hens... I too lost hens to a raccoon, now they are bolted in at night in the coop. I haven't had skunks, do they really dig under the whole building? I don't have wire under either.

I don’t know if it was the skunk that did it all or if it just happen to come across the aftermath. Whatever it was moved 4 bricks and dug a huge hole to get under my coop.

So sorry for your loss... I think we lost one of our two remaining hens (2y olds) around 2am this morning. I got out inside to get one in the coop and lock her up. Yup, I didn't lock them in last night, so my fault. We had lost 2 others about a month ago for the same reason. They free range during the day and had been fine out of the coop at night all summer so I'd gotten complacent. The only feathers I found were from the hen I locked up. No sign of her sister as of yet. I walked about 100 yards diameter from the coop and all I saw was an opossum. My sister saw whatever was chasing them and it sounds more like a weasel - was dark furred so not the opossum. I have 9 pullets, 3 cockrels, and 2 ducks (all 4-6 weeks old) in brooders in the garage so thankfully they are all safe. I've been working on remodeling the barn for the chickens, ducks, and goats but have dragged my feet lately. Now kicking myself in the butt. Just sharing this to say you're not alone, we understand, and don't beat yourself up. You learn from every experience - good or bad. And that's what helps you do things different "next time".

:hugs
