Our coop has a nesting box with access from outside. DH opened it to retrieve our new white hen to show my mother and did not lock it after.

This morning, I wondered why the chickens weren't out and when I went to check they were hiding in the coop. The new white one was gone and there was only one white feather to show for it.

I think it was a racoon. I guess I should be grateful it didn't come back with its friends for the remaining three.

Ugghhh.

Oh man, that's awful!!! I have that same kind of set-up! Our lid weighs a ton, but now I'm thinking we need a latch too. I am very sorry for your loss, but you probably just saved me from having the same kind, so I thank you... :aww

Oh, how awful! Your DH probably is kicking himself over this. At least it only got one, instead of more, huh?

We found her!!!! She's not hurt - yippee!!!

She was on the way high perch in the coop. I never looked there, because none of the chicks had ever gone up there yet. My son found her!

Now I feel dumb........buy happy!

thats good!! one time when i came home, my 6 week old chick gordita was missing. they were all out of their run (at the time i didnt know they could climb chicken wire, havent done it since now, their too heavy) gordita was missing. i found a pile of feathers after hours of searching. it was in the front yard (the front and back are fenced off) i asked my neighbor who has 8 outdoor cats if they brought home a dead chicken. they said no. i was really sad. then later, she came over to tell me that she had a chicken under her porch. i asked what color, and she said black (the one i lost was orangE) i was kinda angry at myself because another chicken was to be lost, and it was my fault. i went over there, and it wasnt black, it was just dark! it was gordita!

apparently they got out of their run, and a cat came into our yard, and chased her off across the street, and she escaped by going through a wooden opening, which cats couldnt get into.

Oh! Was I happy to come to the end of your post!
I had a dog attack once that killed one and scattered my flock. I rounded everyone else up, but I couldn't find Alice, my favorite. All day she was gone, until I was closing up the coop in the evening, and she came squawking out of the woods and ran right inside! Yay! it's such a good feeling!
