Lost my first hen.

I go to the coop this morning and check on the chickens. I have a dog house in the coop for the girls to lay in. Last night went I locked the girls up I noticed her in the dog house. I thought she was sleeping but turns out she was dead. I left her in there all night thinking that she was just sleeping. Anyways I noticed nothing wrong with her the last week. She was laying and seemed fine. Can a chicken just die with no notice? Is it normal?

she could have died because she was trying to lay her egg. {i think it is call chicken bound}

First, I am so sorry. I just lost my very first hen on 3/18. My chicken, we believe, got an impacted crop from a large silk flower that my hubby saw her ingest as he was running to retrieve it from her. He didn't get to her and she died a few days later. We felt her crop getting bigger, but thot she was blocked from being egg bound cuz she had not layed an egg for a couple days. Could you or some autopsy her crop to see? We didn't do that but wish we did just to be sure. It would be nice to know.

She could have eaten something - they eat the dunbest things.
