Maybe you should work on your aim.

A good way to combat any stray dog problem is to acquire your own dog. I have three dogs and live in an area that is prone to doggie drop offs. We have no strays here. Any stray that goes after my feathered babies (including my own) stand the chance of being shot.

I'm just sayin...

You bet I'd shoot a dog that snarled at me on my own property. IN A HEARTBEAT. I adore dogs, but an aggressive dog doesn't get a second chance. He wouldnt give my chickens one. What sickens me is that someone would allow an aggressive dog to continue to roam loose.

(Psst, T.L., did I goof? Sorry!)

My whole issue is this..... if that dog is aggressive towards other animals, and you have small children playing in your yard who's to say that the dog wouldn't be aggressive toward's your kids. That is a chance that I am not willing to take. I would put a bullet between his eye's in a minute!!

edited because I can't spell....

Well the dogs we have encountered were not really aggressive. They killed a chicken but have never so much as growled at us or our kids. So I hate to shoot them when they are probably just not being cared for and just need to be re-homed or put down. I will be calling animal control again Monday since I never heard back from them. And I will insist they bring a live trap. Hopefully that will work? If not, I have a friend who has a gun he will loan me and it is very silent so no one will be the wiser. We are in the city limits but live out in the country. So most around here would not care even if they heard it but I don't want to go to jail or risk a big fine either. So will be trying the legal ways first.

Did these look like purebred dogs or just mutts? Did they seem like pets or strays?

I think you are handling this in the best possible way. Cover your own tail feathers-do it legal until the legal way doesn't work.

If I wasn't so far away, I'd offer to come help. I have pretty good aim for an old cuss with bad eyes.

Don't get me wrong, I think shooting at a dog is totally acceptable if it is a threat. My problem was that I never got the chance to shoot at the dogs that were in my yard. They were gone before I could do anything. And for me, even if I did have the chance to shoot, I know I would have missed, and they would just come back later. But if you set a trap, you could literally catch the dog in your sleep, lol!

Just yesterday, I saw a raccoon in my yard, in the middle of the day. He did not seem afraid of me, so I ran inside and got my husband's .22. I aimed at the raccoon, shot, and of course missed. The raccoon did not run away immediately either. It slowly turned into the woods before I could reload and aim. Not sure if it had rabies, and it was really strange that it was not afraid of me, or the gunshot.
Since I missed the shot, it is time for the trap. I'll make sure the cats are inside!

I grew up out in the country. My dad would shoot stray dogs with a small "kids" type BB gun if they caused trouble. The gun wasn't strong enough to injur at a distance, just sting! Needless to say, few returned a second time!

Becky 'bout got it right. I have a good friend who is a long-time LEO and we've talked about this. Here's what he told, off the record.

"David, in a nutshell, if you live in town or are annexed that way, there is little "freedom" as you would like it. Just shooting the dogs with something that will do any good is liable to land you in municipal hot water... unless you have several things on your side:

A. Record of previous reports to the officials.
B. Record of previous visits by said officials.
C. Inability of officials to do anything about the problem.
D. Laws/ordinances which allow for the shooting....

...shooting a dog without a record of previous incident will probably see you charged."

Coyote hunters use a centerfire rifle to stop their prey - something like a 6-7MM. That is all you should use to do the job humanely, but there is a catch-22:

You are not often encouraged by municipal strongarms to shoot a high-powered rifle in or around town regardless of how good a shot you are.

'Better check on the ordinances before you pull the trigger. I think everyone should own at least three guns, but in this case you should get a paintball gun and live traps of your own. Then do the animal control peoples' job for them, blame the dog for viciousness and watch them all come running.

That was good advice.
