We lost our pig tonight. He started to stagger and fall and have heavy breathing and all the signs matching black widow bites and we see a few of them around here. He passed away later on. While looking up the symptoms of a widow bite my husband found a large widow on the back wall of the house, out in the open, just sitting there. I have a feeling she was the culprit. Everything I have read says to keep areas clean to keep them away but she is the second one I have found out in the open with no cover so keeping areas clear are not going to help all that much with these girls. I am going to cover the yard in Diatomaceous earth around the house and sheds but does anyone else have some suggestions? I also have some natural spray I could douse the sheds with to keep away the food for them. We have seen a small reduction in them with the chickens eating their food but not enough.

I have read that spiders hate eucalyptus and peppermint oil. With the eucalyptus you can hang in bushels around areas and with the peppermint oil, you mix with some water and spray with a spray bottle. I never saw how often to spray. I've heard good reviews with the oil, but have not tried it yet myself.
