Lost Scout

Ruby snapped her hand out, catching and pulling on the whip. She tried to jerk it out of his hand. It was the first chance she had found to get a weapon of any kind since waking up here and she was taking the opportunity.

"A fine roof!" Lord Ragnar was sweaty and covered in dust and bits of thatch, thoughts of the earlier conversation with Emma far from his mind.

"Should hold up all winter, Lord," the older man, Laethros, replied. It was well past noon, but the work was complete at last. "Mind if I take my leave now, Lord. The knee is aching a bit."

Ragnar nodded, thanking him for his assistance and Laethros made a hasty departure. But instead of going home, he set out to find Charles, who had been asking around the settlement if anyone had news of Danielle. "Get your horse," he told the younger man. "We need to make sure neither that girl or her father and Aelfric get back with news of the orc camp..."

Gytha hardly cringed now at the orc's brutal treatment of the other prisoners, realizing numbly that she was starting to grow desensitized to it. But it did motivate her to put more muscle behind the log she was struggling with and managed to get it in place without dropping it. She glanced often at the woods, wondering just how far she would make it before they caught her if she made a break for it.

Her eyes were drawn again to the girl. Was she trying to grab the whip!? Gytha couldn't help but pause her efforts to watch...

Orkhan was genuinely surprised to see and feel that Ruby had grabbed and was now pulling on the whip. Not expecting her to do that, he didn't have as strong of a grip on the whip as he would have if he had intended to actually strike her, and she managed to jerk it out of his grasp.

Not short of weapons himself, he quickly armed himself with a spiked club that was attached to his belt and approached her menacingly. Trapped between him and the wall there wasn't much room for her to escape besides through him, and he wasn't able to let her do that. "Foolish human," he spat, brandishing the club in her face. "Do you want do die here? Drop the whip, or I swear I will make the last few hours of your miserable life the worst you have ever encountered."

Danielle, who had been staying close to Gytha all day, didn't notice that the other girl was attempting to fight back against the orc until Gytha stopped working to watch. Initially she thought the move was brave and courageous, until she considered the chances one girl would have against the massive (in comparison) orc. Ruby's act of defiance would make life harder for them all if she failed...

If there was a time to make a move, now was it. Orkhan was preoccupied with Ruby. Their other overseer was distracted by "encouraging" the man that had lost his wife to work harder. For a split second she considered taking the girl beside her, Danielle, with her. But no, it was risky enough on her own and Gytha would not be responsible for the girl's death. Gytha turned and walked slowly toward the pile of stacked logs, but instead of picking one up, she kept walking, hoping enough attention was on Ruby that she could make it to the treeline.

"No, I don't want to die. That's why I am not staying here," Ruby said and moved away from his club. She lightly flicked the whip to get the handle and looked at the orc, getting the feel of the whip. She tried to keep track of how much room she had between herself and the wall so she would have enough room to use the whip. Narrowing her eyes she sent the whip at the arm holding the club.

Focused on punishing Ruby, Orkhan failed to notice Gytha slip past him to the wood pile. Her act was not missed, however, by one peculiar creature who was hanging around the outskirts of the working area. He approached her slowly and cautiously, but without the urgency of an orc who would be attempting to cut her off. When he got closer it could be seen that he wasn't an orc, but didn't look quite right to be a man either. The unlucky creature seemed to have been the unlucky candidate who possessed the most hideous qualities from both man and orc.

"Gyyyyytthaaaa..." He hissed in a low, unobtrusive tone. It was unclear how he even knew her name. "Where are you going, Gytha?"
