Lost Scout

Strider looked away from Ruby to the two girls then the orcs behind him. He tried to move a little against the foot holding him down. "You got us, can I get up now?" He asked, trying to get their attention on him to give Ruby a chance.

"Shut up!" Orkhan snarled, mashing his boot mercilessly into Strider's back. The idea worked though, because everyone momentarily looked towards him and Strider. Ruby had been so quiet that Draugnot had nearly forgotten that she was still alive.

Ruby reached over to pull the ties, quickly releasing her bow from the bags. She turned and ran, quickly disappearing into the trees.

A low growl rumbled deep in Orkhan's throat as Ruby grabbed her bow and ran. He didn't give the order for Draugnot to shoot, even though he was reasonably sure that his partner could have hit her if he wanted to. The choice that she had made was on her, and unfortunately she was not the one who was going to pay for her mistake. He could see Grishkah standing behind Luella and Danielle, and although he couldn't see Mark or Vorgak, he assumed that the male slave had been captured when the pained scream echoed through the trees. The only one he hadn't accounted for was Bagira, the last female slave, but he decided that she had either gotten trampled by the horses, or killed by one of the orcs.

"Tie their hands," he spoke in orc tongue, looking approvingly at Grishkah. He thought that the young orc had done well in the fight. "We will return immediately to camp and see that the others have turned up."

He hauled Strider roughly to his feet and shoved him forward in the direction that they were going to travel. "As for you, the girl has decided your fate. I will not go back on my word."

Strider kept his balance and glanced back to the orcs "She has done what I taught her to do." He said "You will lose"

Ruby came to a stop and looked back, checking for anyone following her. When she realized no one was she took a moment to get her bow unstrapped and ready, then put her quiver on under her cloak. She looked north then shook her head and turned to circle around, bow ready to fire. She came across Vorgak and Mark and stopped to aim before releasing the arrow. She knew they were armored, so she aimed for the weak spot just under the helmet.

"Take it to the grave." Orkhan grabbed Strider's forehead and jerked his head back, exposing his neck to Orkhan's sharp dagger. He was not yet aware of Ruby's plot to kill Vorgak, but his word still dictated that Strider be killed for Ruby's disobedience. The blood was on her hands metaphorically, but he felt a strong surge of satisfaction on his own part as the knife slid cleanly from one side of Strider's throat to the other.

But that was not all.

This, he thought, could serve as a valuable reminder to the slaves in the weeks to come. So, after delivering a fatal slit, he grabbed Strider's head with both hands and give it a sharp twist to the side to sever it completely. The body was useless to him, but the head could be used as both an encourager to the slaves, and also as a trophy for himself.

Mark's hands only half tied and almost at the same moment that Orkhan put the dagger to Strider's throat, Ruby's arrow plunged into Vorgak's throat. With barely a last gurgle, the large brute fell forward, his entire weight on Mark.

Ruby looked around before moving out to get the orc moved off of Mark. She struggled to move the dead weight, but finally rolled the orc away. "Mark...you ok?" She asked and looked around again.

Mark sucked in a surprised breath when he seen the arrow and attempted to pull himself far enough out of the way that Vorgak would not fall on top of him. With his arms locked behind his back and Vorgak's knee in the way, however, that wasn't so easy. He barely managed to move a couple of inches before the orc fell right on top of him, nearly crushing his right arm as it bent awkwardly under the sudden weight.

It took him a couple of seconds to catch his breath, but then he began wiggling as best he could to free himself. "Yeah... just a little bruised..." He said quietly to Ruby once she had rolled Vorgak off of him.

Draugnot's sharp eyes caught the sound of the arrow, followed by the impact, and knew instantly what had happened. He could see the movement of the bushes as Vorgak fell, but couldn't see Ruby or Mark clear enough to fire his own shot into the trees. It would be a waste of a good arrow. "Do we have to kill again?" He snarled into the trees, taking several aggravated steps towards Luella and Danielle. "Humie show herself, or rest of humie's die!"

In his anger, the small regard that Orkhan had towards human life was beginning to fade quickly. For the amount of work they had completed, he was tempted just to slaughter them all. They were very nearly ready to attack the human settlement, and from there he knew that they would be able to capture new slaves to replace these ones.

In the clearing he knew that they were fairly vulnerable to being hit by another arrow so he tried to move them into the forest. "Get down into the trees." He ordered Grishkah before Draugnot and himself vacated the clearing, leaving Strider's body behind. Knowing that Ruby had heard Draugnot's previous threat to kill Danielle and Luella as well as Strider, he waited for her response. "Come out, come out...humie..." He called towards her general location.
