Lost Scout

Grishkah looked pleased at the praise from Orkhan. Leaving Draugnot to watch over Danielle and Luella, she strode over to Ruby and scoped the girl up as if she weighed no more than a ragdoll. The orc tossed the girl over her shoulder, intending to carry her that way back to the camp.

Still trying to untangle himself from the net, Charles felt beyond flustered as he struggled to find a way to soften his betrayal. "I couldn't.. I mean... I didn't... the orcs are going to kill or enslave everyone. We need to get away from here."

From a short ways away... Laethros stopped snoring...

Ruby blinked her eyes open and struggled weakly before stilling again as she fought the dizziness

Anna fell silent, looking to where Gytha was, uncertain if they should trust him again. She turned towards the door when Leathros stopped snoring.

( Sounds reasonable to me. :) We can say it's getting close to dawn and they've been riding all night.)

"Hmmmm?" Jasper said, shaking his head as he had been half dozing upon Duke. "Oh, I'm alright. Are we almost out of the Greywoods?" he asked, having lost track of how long they had traveled. The surgeon's apprentice twisted in the saddle, stretching his sore muscles as he was not used to riding for more than an hour or so at a time. Even the black colt was carrying his head a little low, unaccustomed to being ridden for such long periods.

(Okay)

"I think so..." Ezra rubbed his eyes and peered ahead, having not paid the closest attention to where they were for the last hour or two. "Hard to tell though, everything is starting to look the same. The sun is almost ready to come up though, and we figured we'd be there by morning. Shouldn't be too far." He noticed that Panago was beginning to walk slower but didn't push his mount faster, knowing that it was as much a strain on the horses as it was on them.

No sooner as he finished speaking, the road began to grow lighter as the trees thinned out. From here, it was only a couple of miles to Aberdeen...

As Grishkah had been unable to, Draugnot slung his bow over his shoulder and moved to tie the hands of Danielle and Luella. He found the young orc's enthusiasm amusing, it reminded him of himself when he had been a spring chicken... not so much anymore though. When Grishkah picked up Ruby, he prodded the other two girls from behind to get them moving. It wasn't far back to the settlement, and the sun was just barely beginning to poke above the horizon... he was looking forward to a nap.

Like many others, Gomez had also been traveling through the night, and how only now arrived back at the orc camp. He was a little bit sore from walking for so long and wanted to catch a rest, but was shocked to see a few plumes of smoke still smoldering in the forest. Usually quiet at this time, this orc camp was surprisingly busy as well as many scrambled to repair any damage and finish putting out the fires. Catching sight of Mulush, he approached the orc quickly and asked. "What happened here? What's going on?"

Mulush grunted in aggravation at the question, as he had spent most of the night trying to control the flames that the humans had made. "TWO PUNY HUMANS!" he spat. "All slaves gone! Gomez... one in cookhouse. You question it? Vorgak tracking the other and the slaves"

"Like you would care, traitor!" Gytha spat angrily, taking a step forward, but she did not swing the rod again, not wanting to accidentally hit Anna in the dark.

"Gytha... " Charles began.

"You knew they were there and sent me out alone," she continued, voice growing louder, but choked with emotion. "Were you hoping they'd kill me?!"

"No! Of course not!"

In the dark tunnel, Laethros moved quietly toward the voices, not lighting a torch lest he alert Charles and the girls to his presence.

"Gytha, he's not alone" Anna said, worry in her voice. "We need to get out of here and warn Lord Ragnar." She didn't dare to move towards Gytha in the dark, afraid of getting hit accidentally. She tried to listen beyond the sounds of Gytha and Charles for Leathros, but couldn't hear anything.

He turned his head toward Anna's voice and managed to get the hammock off himself, dropping it to the floor of the cave. "It's too late for that!" Charles said, still trying to keep his voice low and not realizing that Laethros was creeping up behind him. "Don't you understand!? There's not enough time! Aberdeen will fall. We need to get to Wedmor or even Camden!"

"You can't know that!" Gytha said. But knowing that Anna was right, Gytha thought it best to argue over which direction to take once they were clear of the cave. "Let's get out of here," she said.

"Okay, lets.... oooouufff..." the hilt of Laethros's dagger slammed into the back of Charles' head.

The sky was beginning to lighten as Jasper and Ezra rode their tired mounts back in to the village. Not even considering that Ezra might want to stop at his own house first to speak to his wife about his daughter, Jasper turned Duke straight for Lord Ragnar's residence. Still worried that the lord might doubt their story, the young man dismounted and looked nervously at Ezra. "Ready?"

Anna looked to the door, wishing for a light to see what had just happened. Had Gytha knocked Charles out? She hesitated then, using her feet to find Charles she moved closer to the door, wooden bar up and ready to be used in one hand and her other reaching to find the door so she wouldn't hit it.

"Don't think yer goin' anywhere," Laethros growled as Charles fell to his knees, bringing his hands over his head instinctively to try to protect it from a second blow. "Thought you might get cold feet," the old man sneered, giving a kick to the younger man's back side, trying to force him through the doorway so that he could lock all three of them inside. The door started to screech loudly on it's hinges as Laethros began pushing it closed.
