I'm feeling horribly guilty:

Last night I went out to put the girls to bed.
Some were already roosting when I opened the coop to let them out to free rage for a few minutes.
I noticed droplets of blood from inside the coop going out and after some looking found that one of
my Buttercups was bleeding from her toe.

After inspection, she was fine, just missing a toenail and it was bleeding some. She was acting fine
otherwise - eating and drinking.

I put on some Blue Kote, then she and the others all went up to roost for the night.

She was dead this morning. I am devastated and feel so awful!!. She was a very nice chicken and good layer.
The 2x4 roost was covered with blood I'm sure she just bled out during the night and fell off.

I've inspected the coop and the large enclosed run and have found no other blood to see where this
might have happened.

She is dead, nothing I can do to change that now. Just wanted to vent my sorrow to BYC people that will
understand my grief. Thanks for reading.

I wonder if another chicken pulled on the toenail when the were on the roost? At any rate I am so sorry about this. I hate it when something seemingly minor turns major.

I had this happen just a few weeks ago. My bird is fine today, but when I got home there was blood all over the coop! I couldn't see where the heck it was coming from until I noticed the toenail. I didn't have styptic powder handy so I used flour, then I found the styptic and used that.. thankfully she stopped bleeding, but I was worried about what happened to you.

I agree, maybe someone pecked it or she caught it on something. Those things bleed like heck!

No blood? Sounds more like she might have fallen off /pushed off roost and broken neck. So sorry for ur lose . U did the best u could.

Sorry for your loss. Sounds like there was something else wrong though, and it wasn't just the toe bleeding. Chickens can survive a wing ripped off and their toes eaten, so are much tougher than a parakeet who breaks a nail or blood feather.
