Lots of fluid....

We had a broiler that wasn't doing well this morning, breathing hard and not moving around so we went ahead and butcherd it. When I was "processing" it there was a lot of fluid inside. The bird is only a pound and a half cleaned ,but there was what seemed to be a cup of water that ran out when I cut into it.

Any idea what that is? Is it ok to eat this bird? The meat and everything else looked fine. Granted I've only done 8 birds now, but I've never seen this before.

It could be any number of things. Where, exactly, did the fluid come from? IOW, what part of the bird -- abdominal cavity, crop, etc...?

Personally, I would not eat it. If cooked well would it be likely to get you ill? Probably not. Cook it hot enough or freeze it cold enough and everything dies, but why? My body is not a garbage disposal, that's the whole reason we raise our own food to begin with, after all.

Sounds like heart failure/liver failure leading to ascites. I'd still eat it since that is common in birds, as long as the bird wasn't in the condition so long the meat started to "die". Toss it if it is green, or just feed it all to the dogs.

It was clear. All the birds were fine last night when I went in and cleaned the waterer and his crop was full of food. I guess we'll fry him up on Sunday and see how he tastes.

Thanks y'all.

I have not Cx experience - you might try searching it here on BYC -- use the search link in the upper blue bar - just above your logged in name. I am unsure if you can eat the bird or not.
