We had some bantam hybrids/crosses etc but they were making tiny little eggs and not laying but a couple days a week. So we got 6 new hens with a mixture of breeds including some Rhode Island Reds and I think RI Whites as well. We let the little birds free range and within 3 days they were all dead which is odd since they've been out a lot before. Then the run was attacked and we lost 3 of the 6 new babies (around 2 months old). I have since added 1/2" hardware cloth all the way around and on top so now I have no climb 2X4 which will keep out dogs/foxes/coyotes, then chicken wire...which up until recently kept out everything else...and now 1/2" hardware cloth which so far is keeping out what the chicken wire wasn't any more.

So we still have 4 of our originals...easter egger, 1 bantam, and then 2 (pictured below) I never really figured out what they are...but I think they are old as they don't lay.

THen we got 4 more hens and a rooster (we think) from the same person so they were all about the same age except the 4 from before.

I know there are some RI reds and I guess the white ones are RI whites? Plus brindel colored bird which resembles the reds but isn't red. We also got a turken (naked neck), a black bird, and then one I've not seen before that I think is pretty and she said when she ordered her new birds this year... this one was included as a 'rare breed' and we took it since all hers free range and the lighter colored birds get killed off faster.
What a hodge-podge!!

So what do we have? LOL :) The 1st 2 pics are the two older girls. They don't lay much any more but when they did they were small lught brown eggs. THen the black bird and last the 'rare breed' (and turken). None of the new birds are laying yet but I think it won't be long.

#1 blue cochin bantam
#2 birchen cochin bantam
#3 black jersey giant or black australorp
#4 columbian wyandotte(if rose comb) or columbian rock(if straight comb)
Hope this helps
