Lots of questions....and lots of pic.

I have questions about gender on 13 chickens of all different ages.


This first one is about 14 - 15 weeks old I think it is a roo my hubby thinks it is a hen. It is the same age as the BR and he crows alot and has been for awhile now but the Lt. Brahma hasn't yet. Also I would like to know is why this Brahma's legs are yellow and my hens legs are white.

Next are two that I hatched out on mothers day so they are about 7 weeks old. I know the breed just wondering about the gender.

These are 10 chicks that I bought at a flea market they are almost 5 weeks old 5 are Polish, 3 are Lt. Brahmas and 2 are unknown. Wondering about gender on all.

I'm not even going to try to sex or figure breeds for you but I just wanted you to know that you've got some great looking birds there!!

I will hazard a comment on the two "unknowns" the top one sure looks like it's got Silkie in it.

Thanks so much Chirpy I spend alot of time with them and still haven't gotten anything figured out.....LOL. All ten of them were suppose to be pure but I think the two unknown must have made into the wrong pen. I am not sure what they are crossed with.

THink the first lt. brahma is a hen as well. Now for the others, Im not great with polish, but the ones with the mohawk look I think are the males. THe other chicks look like hens. ANd the last two who are un-identified look like they are silkie cochin crosses. Something I did notice is the single comb on the lt brahma from the flea market.....thats not normal for the breed.

Ok well I guess my hubby was right then. About the other Lt Brahma with the single comb do you think it is a mix? It looks exactly like the others. Should I not keep it for breeding even if it not mixed?

Could be a throw back gene like we sometimes see in wyandottes. I dont know how it will work in a breeding program, I hope someone else would chime in. But if it was me, I wouldn't. I would not use a bird that was not possessing traits that were not characteristic of the breed.

Ok thanks for letting me know that. When it is bigger I'll just move it over to my mixed pen if it is a hen use her eggs only. But do you know why some of my Lt. brahma's legs are yellow and some are white?

If I am not mistaken, their legs should be yellow in color. Your hens, who have been laying, their legs/shanks should be a lighter color. When laying eggs, the color of the yolk comes from the pigment in the legs. The more they lay, the lighter their legs will be. Hope I have helped

The very first picture of the Light Brahma that is 15 weeks old in front of the Barred Rock is NOT a female. I am 100% sure on that. It has pointed saddle feathers coming in.
The 7 week old ones the buff colored one is a boy and the blue one looks to be one too, though hard to tell.
The polish look to be girls, though hard to tell at that age.
The small Brahma chicks, the first one looks to be a boy.

The two unknowns look to be boys.

Sorry, yolk color is based heavily on what they eat. That is why factory hens have pale yolks.
