My four Buff Orpingtons are 15 weeks old and free-range in our backyard most of the day. They have been pretty quiet until today. Several times in the afternoon they all joined in on the "egg song," bawking and bawking so loud! I looked around for an egg where they had been hanging out and didn't see one. They were pretty anxious about something and LuLu seemed like she was trying to be the loudest. Is this something they just do even when they are not laying yet? Maybe it's a pecking-order thing? We live in a suburb with lots of houses around so I'm a little concerned about the noise.

They are probably practicing. Here are some picture of my birds with one doing the bird song telling the others to hurry up as she wants in a nest box.

Mine do the same, even my rooster sings his heart out. So funny, but you better start keeping your eyes open for eggs, Easter everyday...

I love that sound - they seem SO proud of the egg laying - can't wait till my new baby chicks start doing it (they're only 16 weeks but hopefully soon!).

They do it when getting ready to start laying my barred rocks and buff orphington just started laying last week and it does gett loud but I talked to the neighbors to make sure everything was okay with the sound and alls good so I gave my first 6 eggs to my next door neighbor and told them to bring the carton back and ill put there name on it for future eggs

I plan to make an enclosed community nest box with one side open so it will muffle the song a little more

Yep, bribing the neighbors DEFINITELY is helpful.

My chickens will make their "egg calls" when any one of them lays an egg. The layer will start making noise and it's really funny because the other hens will look a little confused and then they'll start mimicing her. Or, one of them will go into the nesting area and see the egg, cocking their head to the side and starting up all over again.

When my girls behave that way there was a hawk in the area. He swooped down and got a dove. It scared them to death. 2 days later he got a hen and 2 days later another hen. Be careful.
