Jumping in for a quick "Hi"! nothing but work going on here & way too much of that -- but -- this too shall pass come April 18th -- AND (drum roll, please)! I got my 90 day review and got a RAISE! I don't remember the last time I got a raise -- where I worked before, with the company slowing going down the drain, it was more "be glad you still have a job" than a raise!

AND--- (more drum roll) I also negotiated to come in earlier in the morning so I could have an hour off for lunch---so I'll be able to go HOME for lunch! or go run errands... at any rate, get out of here & have a change of scenery for an hour! This is one of the busiest streets in town so you can't exactly get out & do anything in only 30 minutes.

Birds are all fine, I think I have 2 RIR little roos for sure -- Jeff do you still want them?
Oh & sorry to get you two - Jeff & Chris - mixed up!

Been shopping for a new home computer -- any suggestions from any of you would be greatly appreciated!

As far as the computer unless your one of the ones that want to spend a fortune on an Apple get you a Acer or something like that. Their cheap, last a good long while and if it does go out in a few years or so it won't hurt so bad buying a new one. My MIL just got an awesome laptop with a 2 year warranty for less than $500. Desktops you can get way cheaper than that!!

I use the large plastic tubs in my house for the first couple of weeks then move them into an outdoor brooder. Believe me, by week two you'll be ready for them to go out because they start smelling and by then they're beginning to fly. Some of them learn to jump out of the box around week two. It's not fun to have to clean up chicken poop on your counters or floor.

The growout pen would be OK as long as you could hang a light for warmth. Will any part of the growout pen be enclosed?

We are going to put a small coop in the growout pen. So it would be okay to keep them confined in the coop with a heat source? How old are they when you give them access to the run?

In the coop with a heat source is fine. Make sure that they can get away from the heat in the event they get too hot. On the run, much of it depends on the weather. If we continue to have nice weather you can put them in the run by four weeks. Don't put them with older chickens because they'll get beat up. I've put some as young as two weeks in the runs if the weather was warm and the night temperatures were not too chillly.

Yes I sure do Terri, I don't know when exactly, but a buddy of mine should be headed to Alex. to get some motor parts out of the machine shop soon. I'll see when he's planning on going if not soon enough, I'll see if I can get over there or some other arrangement. I'm busy here too with work and not enough of me to do it all as usual, but yes keep them for me I got plans for at least one right now.

Thanks, kuntrygirl! It has been a long year with our flock. We ordered another batch and they were doing great until a predator started picking off our chickens. We lost about 6 hens--of course my children's favorites! Ugh! We finally just had to lock them up until we can cover the whole run with wire.

I called the Breaux Bridge and Opelousas TSC. Opelousas said they have New Hampshire Reds...I don't know anything about them other than they derived from RIR? Are they any good? The closest the BB one had was red pullets (?)....

I'm watching craigslist, but I was reading on BYC about incorporating new chicks into a flock. How concerned should I be not ordering from a hatchery and "knowing" where they come from and putting them in with our flock (when they're older)? We are looking for recently hatched, a couple days, does that cut down on concerns?

Hey Mike, won't have any Speckled Sussex..... I'm not sure what in the H%$L is going on but out of the 16 eggs I set every single one of them were clear. Not a one was fertile.

I'm so flipping mad right now!!

SO either he's shooting blanks or not breeding them at all. What's crazy is I hatched 3 of their eggs in November. On a better note every Golden Cuckoo Marans egg I set is progressing right on schedule!!

Well I'm hoping I have this problem solved! I had a back up Speckled Sussex roo that I just got rid of a month ago. I got him back last night. They are coming next Wednesday to do my NPIP recertification so it's the only reason I decided to get him back. I was outside for quite a bit yesterday and never saw that rooster mate with any of the hens.

I got my Sportsman yesterday. Got it hooked up and it's been running about 12 hours now. Plan to transfer my GCM eggs in it tonight.

Yesterday was a beautiful day! Hope everyone enjoyed theirs!!

OH, the New Hampshire Reds are great!!! I have some of them. They are some of my laying machines. VERY docile girls. VERY nice, no trouble and they get along with EVERYONE. They are some of my sweetest girls that I have. I love them.

As far as bringing home new flock that you have purchased from someone else. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO VERY scared of that. It's always nice to find someone who is NPIP certified. The only time that I have bought new birds from someone was from Terri (BYC'er) (pea fowl) and I wasn't at all worried about Terri's birds. And I also bought 2 peacocks from an 80 year old man but they were quarantined from the rest of the flock. Gracie (another BYC'er) gave me a handsome little gosling but he was only days old and I wasn't worried at all because my little man was raised inside the house with another newly hatched gosling. Other than that, I don't think that I have ever purchased chickens from someone else. I'm too paranoid.

Any new chicks that I get come straight from the hatchery. I think you have the right idea as far as recently hatched and a couple days old (chicks). I would think (and the other La-yers can jump in on this one) that it would cut down on concerns as you have stated. Did you think about ordering from a hatchery and you could get exactly what you needed and your concerns about diseases, etc would be eliminated? I ordered 40 RIR pullets from Ideal Poultry in December and I am VERY pleased with their stock. They had a special at that time. I wish I would have known you would be needing some chicks, I could have ordered some for you with my order and dropped them off to you. :/

What breeds are you looking for again?
