"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Good morning everyone. I hope that everyone had a good weekend. My guinea hatching is done. The final count was..............
9 hatched
2 zipped but didn't hatch. They died trying to come out of the shell.
5 did not fully form in the egg.
5 were not fertile.
I guess half is ok being as though I"m still a newbie when it comes to using the incubator.
They sure are fiesty. They take out running in the brooder when I go in to see them.

Terri, in response to your question about when the peas lay eggs, well I noticed this weekend that they lay in the evening (6pm or so). I watched all day and no eggs and then about 6pm, I went out to their pen and eggs were there. I will be setting the pea eggs in the incubator in the next few days. And I'm crossing my fingers that the 8 pea eggs under the broody hens will hatch.

I am DEFINITELY on pins and needles. Anything from your girls yet?

That happened to us with our first hatch! Out of 28 chicken eggs...only 5 hatched!!!

Same scenarios!!! Our broody's were on them...but we also had a snake that was hanging out grabbing some! It even took one that was half way out of the shell!!! I was sooo mad!!

We hatched 5 out of 12 turkey eggs this last time...I have 3 pipping right now, no movement yet on the other 5...

We are now in the market for an incy!!!!

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Good luck on a better hatch. Post pics when you can.

Thanks for the tip about the cradle bars I was wondering about that after I put them on lock down.. I was nervous. I also noticed that the tray is VERY slippery. I see the babies slipping and sliding on the trade, so I will have to put a paper towel and line the tray, I guess.

I use those rubber shelf liners!! Once your done and their all nasty throw them in the sink with some bleach water. They'll look like new!!

Hey Missy yeah I'm pretty sure its a Copperhead of course the most telling part of a snake (like yours is there) is usually destroyed right out the gate and that's the head LOL. A little story on that: My Grandad was a snake extrordinaire, so to say, he knew his snakes, He was a preacher too and the ladies at the church were always telling their stories or even bringing him a(dead) (keyword here) snake to identify for them. Well around here colloquially we have what "everybody" calls a "ground rattler?" note I put it in QUOTES right. Well, in all the snake information in the world there is nowhere any evidence of such a critter being on Gods green earth named that. He was always so puzzled at the women who were telling of such or would bring him a specimen for IDing and it would always be beheaded, and he would tell them well you destroyed the tell all most important part. I would guess to the day he died he never got to ID what in the HEdouble toothpicksticks a ground rattler is/was, LOL. I myself say they are probably juvienile something anothers from brown grass snakes to the bad-@$$ cottonmouth water moccasins, who knows? The reason I say your's is the copperhead it does have the hour glass shaped markings on the body, most Louisiana cottonmouths are black/dark brown with yellow bellies. Some of the info you get (just as on this site too) on the internet is absolutely wrong. If you see even on the cottonmouth page you posted it even has pic of a timber ratter on there cottonmouths don't have rattles and some of the pics on there are pics of copperheads too. The copperhead page looks to be pretty accurate though (unusual for a web page)LOL remember the adage "believe nothing you hear and only half of what you read/see".

Well I can tell you he has his head straight up in the air and his mouth wasn't open!! Don't even know if you can see anything in this pic.. This sister wasn't getting anywhere's close to it!!

Terri, I finally was able to catch one of my boys fanning this weekend. I can't wait until next year when their tail is fuller.

Awwww they're so handsome! I wish I had an India Blue! I'll be glad when mine get fuller tails next year, too. I got some golfballs I'm putting out in the pen tonight. Mr. Burt said his always laid in the evening, too.

Good afternoon everybody! I have to go catch up on posts. I agree Missy, that looks like a copperhead to me.

Jeff I'm sure sorry i missed meeting you! Of all days, today we're on deadline at work to get some tax stuff that has to go out today, plus I had a Dr apt. Hope you enjoy the RIRs! Sorry you didn't take that last roo!

I have two very handsome RIR roos free to a good home. Take one! Take both! They will be 4 months old on the 24th of April. They are going to be huge! They are heritage bloodlines (Roy Autry & somebody else, I forget but I have it written down at home). I hate to send them to freezer camp but I don't want or need 3 roos (I'll keep one though, just because I like these so much).

Congrats on the guinea hatch Julie! When I first started incubating I had a couple of zero hatches. You learn a little bit more every time you do it. Like almost anything else I guess.

OK back to work for me!

I have a lot of those. I use them in my nesting boxes as well. Thanks for the tip.
