"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Where in LA are you? I can't keep up with everyone.

I feed exclusively organic and order from an organic (thus non-GMO) mill. I get wholesale pricing (which is still significantly higher than non-organic); it's the shipping that really gets you. I have it shipped by a freight line and pick it up at their warehouse in BR. The more feed we order, the cheaper the rate per pound. I buy it in 50 lb sacks, but it is available in bulk shipping bags up to 2,000 lbs ($0.37 to $0.42 per lb if bulk of 2,000 lbs min).
Keep in mind that the organic feed lasts me longer (at least 1.5 times) than the Flockraiser I used before I found the mill. The organic feed is NOT processed/cooked and retains all it's nutrients, so the birds eat less. The feed is a mash (coarsely ground or rolled). There are fines in the blend that include fish and kelp meal. My birds love it and don't waste a thing. The mill is also super accommodating. They will change the coarseness of the grind or alter ingredients (if available) upon request.
Pricing (50 lb bag) ranges from $23.50 (developer) to $27.50 (soy-free layer is the most expensive, regular layer is $24). Shipping has run anywhere from $5 to $10 per bag because my order sizes have varied so much.
You may have read an old thread I posted trying to see if others in LA had an interest in organic feed lol. I had NO response!

Glad you made it out okay from the storm too! I like the idea of the organic feed, and the less waste sounds good, but yikes the price is a lot more, and I don't know if I could do it with the amount of birds I have right now. Once I have some more storage, I am thinking about going to a mill and getting the feed in bulk...but then I have to move or unload 1000lb sacks! I am going to send you a message on FB...want to ask you about your birds!

What are those grey birds on the left of your photo? They are gorgeous!

They loook to be Lav. Ams by the poofs on the hens head Id reckon the boys are the same.

Hey Terri and the rest of ya'll layers.

I just wanted to tell you those RIR girls are the worst, spoiled rotten, things I have here on the place now. LOL did you do that or did they just normally adapt that way I mean I could see if I had raised them from wee ones but anyway they are good girls and the boys are terrorizing the other hens ..well the ones that don't try to whip them still yet,LOL.

Jeff

Lavendar Ams - OK I think I'll have to hatch some of those next -- they are gorgeous! the Sebbies are so beautiful - remind me of swans (only nicer)!

LOL Jeff @ the RIRs being spoiled - I think they came out of the egg that way - the trio I kept acts exactly the same way.

Gracie I think LaMike had some Coronations - you might PM him.

Busy @ work, sure is a gorgeous cool fall day - wish I could move my desk outside!

i have plenty of land but dont quite have all the equipment to make it happen yet, i do help a real good friend of mine out at his feed store when he has to work his other job i cover the store for him so i will see what i can dig up, but in the next year i should get a grist meal and be able to plant some and hopefully make it work that and a planter is about all i still need to make it happen so im not far off and when i get it figured out whatever i have left ill be willing to sell cheap.
I hope you get to grow some of your own,.. that would be great!
