"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I know what you mean Terri! I said I was shutting my bators down, but they are currently humming away in my spare bedroom!

Am I the only one who raises something to laying age, but then decides that I want to get rid of them and try another breed? I've done this a couple of times, and it's really not smart of me! The increasing feed prices have also influenced me to maybe downsize. I think I am going to just let my Partridge Rocks free range if I can't get rid of them for a decent price. If anyone is interested in them I would like $45 for the trio and $30 for the pair. Also have a few chicks I can throw in for free! They are nice birds from Horstman lines. They are about 7 months old and just starting to lay. Nice looking birds that would make a great 4-H project! Let me know if anyone is interested. I will try to get some pics up by tomorrow.

I have my heart set on raising some White Minorcas. The only people that I can find with them is Sand Hill Conservatory, and they won't return my calls :-( Supposedly there are only 100 or less of them in the whole country. Sounds like a worthy project to me!
I might be interested, "ya got them" pics yet LOL

I'll post them for you later tonight! I was busy yesterday building some roll away nest boxes. They will be put into effect this afternoon, so I be sure to post pics and let everyone know how they work! Those dang egg eaters are driving me crazy!

I sold some, I gave some away and I kept too many!

Half were Extra Roos for the stew pot and I make and use a lot of chicken stock in cooking. I also feed 2 big retrievers, as you can see one sitting on his sofa, to the left of this page, and rooster meet is cheaper than dog food and better for them. They guard the flocks, so they deserve it. I currently have 100+ duel purpose an rainbow layer chickens, close to 100 ducks, 30+ White Holland Turkeys, & 4 Black African Geese, not to mention rabbits, s they have a lotto guard and have free run of the house an property.

Te only problem I have is when i put out the hatchlings, they want bring the baby chicks back inside and if a small bird dies, they want me to make it alive again !!!

For a while , a middleman was buying all the bitties I could hatch, each week and reselling them at an auction house in his area, but he was not reliable and I did not have the space or the brooders for that many birds to hold them. There is a good market for the hatching eggs, but the cost feed has gotten too high, since corn is being wasted on poor quality gas instead of being used for food !

I don't have the time or the energy to grow my own feed anymore. I am just too old

!! Where is the female old person? LOL Well, anyway, you get the message. (and this computer or program can't keep up with my slow typing, either) I have a fattening up program going on now, to reduce the chicken and duck populatins and fill the freezers. I want less chickens and more turkeys. I hatched out quite a few turkey eggs, sold a few and only got to keep a couple dozen for next year for myself (don't tell anybody I still have any) A good customer wants another couple dozen poults, but with the daylight lessening, my 2 Turkey hens are going into molt!
I hope they lay again before winter sets in.
Well, I have to go feed the birds and rabbits, then cook supper, before the birds put themselves to roost in the barn for the night, About dark-thirty, I'll go close the barn doors for the night.

Write back when you can.
God Bless us all,
Celie

Pics as promised Jeff! I have 2 roosters and 3 hens. $45 for the trio, $30 for the pair, or $70 for all 5.

Plus a few extra pics from today. A thunderstorm started to blow in as I left, and it was beautiful out there! I also included a pic of my BBS Marans and my Lav/Lav Split Ameraucanas.

i just got back from the dequincy sell, the chickens were cheaper than ive seen in years, half grown poulets were going for 75 cents a piece, silkie pairs were $5 each, i brought a pair of light brahma cochen bantams that looked great and they brought 2.50 each. good laying hens were 3 to 5 dollars each with only a couple bringing $7, if you have a good quarantine pen it would be a great time to buy a few but i was selling

but they were some i really needed to get rid of, i did manage to get me some half grown guenies (i hope thats how you spell it lol) and 2 nice rir roos, after 30 days they will get to meet the girls.

Those prices are just sad! Not even worth the gas to get there! If I don't get what I want for my Plymouth Rocks, then I'm just going to free range them. I don't NEED to get rid of anything... just trying to make more coop space and reduce the feed bill. Price will probably pick back up in the spring though.

Did you remember if they had any flying Mallards and what they went for? Good luck on your hatch!

yea they had a few but i cant remember what they brought, i know they were cheep, but you will probably get that price most people dont mind paying for quality and those you have do look great. and you know how it is you just never know what your bringing into your flock from that sell. i rather buy form individuals myself its just not as big a risk. good luck selling them. i brought the 2 bantams and 4 rir hens and one nh red roo and cleared 15 dollars for them all but the hens were some i got a couple years ago from a friend and i needed to get rid of em anyway they were pretty old

Hey Ya'll,..
Need some info,.. is anyone feeding organic feed,.. and if so where are you getting it,.. or is anyone mixing their own?
I've been looking for a few years now in the southeast area,.. no success,.. some suggest having my own milled,.. but the mills I spoke with don't even know if their grains are GMO,.. and some don't know what it means,.. hoping some of you further north might have seen some organic feed,.. it would be worth the trip for me,.. I have friends that would buy some too.

Thanks

It would probably be pricey, but have you talked to your feed store about ordering any?
