"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I had a strange conversation with a guy this morning. As most of you all know, I am looking for hens for this older guy in my neighborhood who bought some sick hens from another guy. He ended up having to kill about 15 of his hens. This included his healthy hens that got a bad respiratory disease from the sick hens he unknowingly bought from someone else. Well, I called this guy up this morning and told him that I was looking for some hens for someone else. I told him what the guy was looking for and he said he had it. I asked the guy was his pullets healthy and he said yes. I explained that the older guy had bought some sick hens and brought them home and they made his other hens sick. Now this is the kicker.............The guy on the phone said that chickens usually get sick when you buy them from someone and bring them to your place. I was like, "HUH"? NOPE! Sorry, not true. I told him that was NOT true. I told him that if sick hens are purchased from someone and brought back to that person's chicken yard, will bring that same illness to a healthy flock and make everyone sick. Now I"m having second thoughts about letting this older guy aware of the possibility of getting these hens. This guy's hens may be sick too.

Yeah, I don't think I'd say anything - sounds like this guy is not too savvy about chickens!

We'll be here ALL DAY. :hit I'm so sleepy and my patience is short today. I cleaned and packaged eggs for HOURS last night. Everyone got their Thanksgiving egg order in. I am SOLD OUT of eggs. I don't think I have any to make myself some potato salad for tomorrow. Now, who am I gonna buy farm fresh eggs from? :smack

While not at your level, I ran into a similar situation! -- you know I have been gathering eggs the past couple of weeks to incubate - and my girls have NOT been laying well at all, just coming out of moult.
Well they finally did start laying & Mom mentioned she was almost out of eggs, so I brought her a dozen a couple of days ago.

Then last night started thinking about potato salad & realized I have no "older" eggs to boil - just 3-4 fresh ones that won't peel out worth a hoot! So I had to call Mom & explain that I need to go trade 4 "newer" eggs for "older" ones if we want potato salad tomorrow!

So sorry you have to work all day! NOT FAIR!!! :hit

:yuckyuck

:lau

LOL @ you having to go trade "newer" eggs for "older" eggs. Gotta love it.

Glad you said that. Then I won't say anything. I'll just let it be my secret. I think what I will do is just when I order my gazillion pullets, I'll plan to let this older guy have about 10 or 15 pullets. I think I will feel more comfortable having the pullets come from my place then a total stranger.

I just had a guy down the road show up at our back door, wanting to know if we had any fresh eggs to sell. I told hIm sorry, no, my hens are all old & coming out of moult -- but Inglewood has several hundred chickens & plenty of eggs, so sent him their way. (Hey Julie, they get $4.00 a dozen for their eggs - sweet)! And you ought to see the chicken tractor they made out of an old donated schoolbus! -- it's on their Facebook page (Inglewood Farms). They have white leghorns & RIRs in their laying flock. Really nice eggs. I don't know where they got them from but I know they are hatchery production chickens, not heritage.

Then he asked if we had any feathers, as their grandson is coming to visit & wants to make them a Thanksgiving turkey - the kindergarten class takes potatoes & sticks feathers in them, etc to make a "turkey" -- Oh yes, we could help him out there! He left with guinea, peacock & chicken feathers - that ought to be the fanciest turkey in the whole class!

Right now our back yard looks like a feather mattress exploded in it! I'll be so glad when this moult is over!

We got some bad news last week. My hubby went for a routine chest xray and a spot was detected. While doing a biopsy on it, the technician deflated my husband's right lung.resulting in a 30 hour hospital stay, they got it reinflated. Now we got the results and it is lung cancer. the surgeon wants to remove the right upper lobe as soon as possible. this will be a major surgery! it is a good thing that i didn't order my black australorp chicks, since he will probably be in ICU for a little while and possibly a week's stay in the hospital. Our cats and dogs can pretty much fend for themselves while I am busy at the hospital. Hubby also has a tethered spinal cord causing his nerves to die and the muscles of his body to deteriorate. rough going here lately since he is between pain mgt. drs. and no GP will prescribe narcotics for him. he is in horrible pain and can barely manage. Due to his spinal condition he has lost the use of his legs and losing strength in his arms now too. please keep us in your prayers, they are greatly appreciated and needed. I'll try to keep everyone posted on his progress! thanks, Garilyn
Garilyn, I'm very sorry to hear about your husband. I'll be praying for healing and happiness for you both!

That's gonna be one excited kindergartener! He'll be proud as a peacock of his turkey lol!

Burying cat pee gives him muddy paws!

Maybe. But I had semi-dried cat pee streaked down the windshield.

I am going to double my efforts to trap that little sucker & get him neutered. I have no animosity towards stray cats; I know it wasn't their choice to be dumped off here. But I sure don't want them propagating!!!

If anyone knows anyone who has one or if you have one and want to sell a food/meat scale, please let me know. I"m looking for a kitchen food scale that goes to at least 40 lbs.
A week or so ago, I bought a postal scale on EBay, that is compact enough to use as a kitchen scale and is accurate up to a tenth of an ounce and goes up to 86 pounds, works off 3 batteries (including batteries and an AC adapter) for $14.20 including shipping! I think they still have some. Here is the auction I won. They were auctioning one every 10 to 15 minutes, so you can probably get one for the same price or maybe less!
