"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

WWYD (What would you do)

I just received information that an older gentleman (about 70 years old) who purchased about 20 hens from me about a year ago, has found out that he is going blind. Unfortunately, he won't be able to care for the 20 hens that I sold to him and he wants to give them back to me. He said that he refuses to give or sell the chickens to anyone else. He is demanding that the chickens go to a good home and he wants to give them back to me free of charge. I feel so sorry that he is going blind because he is sooooooo nice. Just to sit around and talk to him is a pleasure. I love hearing stories from our older generation. Such a learning experience. I sure don't want to have to deal with the quarantine for 30 days, etc, etc, etc, but I feel so bad and I can't tell him no. And I know he takes excellent care of his animals. What should I do? What would you do?

Maybe you could line up a good home for them ahead of time, and then speak with him about it.Explain that you don't really have the room for them right now or something, but you have a wonderful place for them and you have already checked it out.

Given his circumstances, I would line up a good home for them. If I didn't just go through the ordeal of NPIP certification I'd offer to take them off your hands. But, too much trouble to go through again. Maybe you, or he, could put an ad in the Farmer's Market Bulletin to sell, or give, them.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Whiskey Bay, i, really dont know anyone that is local that would want that many hens.

grambysfarm, i feel the same way being as though i just went through the NPIP testing. i would have to call the vet back to test them.

lamike, i can't remember what breeds I sold him. i would have to take a look at them again.

I will try to give him a call and feel him out and see how he feels about re-homing them to a good home. I don't think that will set well with him.

Why me???????

Kuntrygirl, my son has six hens that I gave him for Christmas. I'm sure that he wouldn't mind having another 6 - 10 hens if the guy is willing to split up his flock. I think 20 is a bit much for most people to take on.

Ok, I will keep you posted on what the old man says. You're right, 20 hens is surely too much for me. This is the time that my girls go broody and I am looking forward to at least 100 new chickens for 2011. With these extra 20 hens, I can just imagine the number of broody hens.

Well, tomorrow will be the first one so I'll let you know!! I've been told by a few people that the results might not be immedietly so I'm just hoping!!

Wish me luck!!

You know ya'll bring up a good point about the NPIP testing!! I know they say it's once a year but does that mean that every time you get new birds they have to be tested unless they come from a NPIP certified person???

ETA: I don't know what to tell you about the birds!! I know you'll do what's right for the old fella!!
