OK, I promised to tell my Goose story, so here goes:

I had a friend with a mated pair of Brown African geese and asked me to incubate the 3 eggs the goose laid for him. 2 out of the 3 were fertile and hatched. About 3 months after that, he took a job out of town and had to get rid of all his birds. I bought the pair of geese and he gave me the 2 , that I hatched for him, that fortunately turned out to be another mated pair.
yesss.gif
About 6 months later before they started to lay again, the oldest male, got taken, during the night. (probably a raccoon or a fox), a couple of days later, the second male was taken, too.
love.gif
We looked all over to where the predator could have gotten in, and could not find any holes in the fencing or holes in the yard. Then we spied a drainage covert that we had put several metal posts in front of, and an opening a little too small for the body of the goose to fit through. There was the second male goose's body, headless, half pulled through the opening between the posts. We put a 150# grate in front of the drain, but we then only had 2 females and no males, and they started laying eggs 3 days later. two infertile eggs everyday.

I went on line and ordered the min. of 8 Brown African Geese required by Ideal Poultry. When they came, they were cute robust healthy baby geese.
love.gif
We kept them in the brooder for a few weeks, but the week we put them on the pond 2 were taken by chicken hawks or owls. So we were left with 6 plus the 2 mature females. Luckily, 4 turned out to be males, giving us 4 pairs to mate.
clap.gif
As they grew, I realized that the new geese were not the breed I ordered.
th.gif
They had sent Brown Chinese Geese, instead of Brown African Geese. The feathering is exactly the same, but the Chinese are much lighter, with longer necks and noticeable different knobs! Now I am back to square 1 with my 2 mature female Africans.
hit.gif

So, I called Ideal Poultry. They confirmed that I ordered African, but said I would have to send them pictures. DH went out and bought a digital camera, because we did not have one that worked (I had one, but lost the CD program for it and could not download one, because it was obsolete) and took pictures. I sent them, twice, to Ideal, but have not gotten any response from them. They just ignore me! I am going to try one more time, and if they do not correct their error, I won't be buying from them again. I have bought a lot of birds from them, over the years, too!
somad.gif

I find the Chinese are very much more aggressive than the African. The African are very gentle and terrific parents, too!
love.gif

Does anyone have any real Brown African Geese, I can buy eggs from this spring to hatch?

I traveled to Breaux Bridge yesterday to pick up a rooster and some eggs. Left witha dozen eggs, two roosters and six chicks now in quarantine. Geez. However, the trip was good for my family. The man had literally THOUSANDS of quail everywhere. All I could do was smile at my hubby's and children's wonderment...never again will they tell me I have TOO MANY CHICKENS!

Were you the one I told about Tim's chicks with the lavender orp. roo and did you end up buying a rhode island red roo too? If that was you, I just missed you by a couple of hours after you!I hope that you enjoyed your visit with Tim, he is very sweet and let me hold my first baby chick ever! She was a little rhode island red and he doesn't ever hold his babies, too many of them, as you saw! She snuggled into my hand and went to sleep while i petted her. I sure did hate to have to come home empty handed. I loved seeing how well he has his property set up and how many different varieties, all separated. Thousands of quails and black copper maran babies, buff orps., seabrights, tuxedo quails, larger breed quails, button quails that had just been hatched, lavender orp. chicks that are absolutely gorgeous! I was walking around in his pens and from behind me i heard a very loud crow, I turned around and there stood a big, beautiful rooster, and he was BIG! I didn't realize that roos get that big. He was so much larger than the hens in the same pen. I am in heaven when I see the babies. He is right up the road from me and i will be going back for more pickled quail eggs and fresh free range eggs. I had never eaten a fresh egg, just ones from the grocery store, well worth $2.50. the shells were much harder, large brown eggs and the yolks were orange. If you are interested in visiting Tim in Breaux Bridge, here is his post from craigslist. Most of you who have chickens won't go home empty handed. Baby chickens for sale, day old to 3 week old - Dark Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpingtons, Lavender Orpingtons, and Black Copper Marans. Call 337-296-6021 Please tell him that Garilyn Bardash sent you! If it was you Belle, thanks for telling Tim that I sent you, I appreciate it!

I saw your male peacock fanning yesterday! He's the largest of the ones I hatched this past year - he's going to be a real beauty!

Good grief! to go to all that trouble & then end up w/the wrong geese! I'm so sorry Ideal isn't cooperating with you - you'd think they wouldn't want to lose your business!
