Frostbite will be black/dark purple. The reason for the earlobes/combs/wattles may not be real bright red this time of the year is because the blood flow is what turns them "redder" and beings its cooler now their radiators don't need to work so hard to regulate their temps so therefore duller appearing combs,wattles and lobes. Also too alot of hatchery type reds(RIR/production reds, NH, and RSL) will have a whitish hue to the earlobes anyway as they have a lot of Leghorn influence in their makeup/genetic backgrounds.

Good morning La-yers. It was kind of sleety this morning at 6 a.m. when I went out. Yesterday's drive was hard - it rained anywhere from a drizzle to hard, driving rain all the way there & back. When I drove over the Mississippi river bridge at Baton Rouge, you could not tell the difference between the sky, the fog & the water - it was all one grey blob, like driving in cream of mushroom soup.

Mal is on a new kind of drop - this is the only one we haven't tried yet, & Fri if his readings are down below 30 we will know he's stable again for a while & continue the new medication, if they are up we will have to schedule eye removal surgery next week. But at least I know I have tried every possible thing. A lot of people don't get it, but this dog is my heart & soul. He means a lot more to me than a lot of people I know, & I will move heaven & earth for him, no matter what it costs me.

Hey Julie waved when I went through Opelousas-- boy did you guys get a lot of flooding there!

Good morning Terri. Sorry to hear about the drive on yesterday. Glad that you all made it home safe.

What med is Mal on? What's the name of it? Will it help lower the pressure in the eye? I totally understand about working with getting Mal's eye healthy. I have been there and done that. People called me crazy when I drove to Texas every month working with a vet specialist on my dog's eye. It was a no brainer when I found out she had eye problems. I didn't even second guess. It was like, "Ok, I'm taking her to Texas". She rode in the front seat with me and took a few naps and was happy as a lark. We stopped for bathroom breaks, got back in the car and kept driving. Some people asked me was I going to put my dog down because she eventually went blind AND deaf. My response to them was, "Do you kill people because they go blind and lose their hearing?" I think they got the picture and stopped questioning about the level of care that I seek and provide for my dog. ;) I don't think they wanted to go there with ME. I will always provide the BEST level of care for ALL of my animals. So Terri, please do what you have to do for your babies. Some of us get it. ;) For those that don't, then Oh Well. I feel for them.

Yea, Terri, we got A LOT of flooding. I'm still paranoid about all of the water. :hide
 
Someone contacted me about wanting a crested duck but I only have 1 and that little bugger is not for sale. Does anyone have a crested duck or know someone who has a crested duck? If so, please let me know and I will contact the lady and let her know.
 
39 degrees here. This is getting on my nerves. I will be bringing in my oldest tom turkey to spend a few nights in the house. His poor old body can't take this cold weather. I will give him a warm bath and put him in the warm laundry room.

I made it home and the first thing that I did was go to the bathroom and run a warm bath for my boy. I then went to the chicken yard to get my old Tom turkey. I found him standing upright under the raised coop and he was full of mud from walking around in the chicken yard. He looked horrible. I picked him up and brought him inside. I let him warm up so that his body temp could adjust to the warm inside temps before putting him in the bathtub that was full of water. After picking eggs and closing up the coops, I came back in and bathed my boy. The water immediately turned brown because of all of the mud. He let me bathe him with no problems. In fact, I think that he was purposely turning around in the tub so that I could wash the other side. After bathing him, I towel dried him and gave him a good pedicure. He remained still and let me work on him. Afterwards, I put him in the laundry room on top of the comforter. It took him about 3 minutes to find a comfortable spot to lay down. And they say that turkeys are dumb. Well not this one. I feel so much better knowing that he will not be in the freezing temps tonight.

Okay, so this morning when I was driving to work (I teach in Welsh) I saw a bunch of stuff on the side of the road and thought it looked like dead animals... It was dark so I just told myself I was crazy and didn't think too much about it.
Well, on my way home I could clearly see it was dead birds right by the side of the road. So I stopped to see what may have happened. I could see right off that someone had removed the breast and thrown the rest of the bird. IMHO this seems mighty wasteful...maybe I am wrong, but that was what my gut told me. I am all for processing and eating whatever meat you want, but to seemingly waste other stuff and just dump bodies basically on the road at a stop sign?!?!?!
I snapped a few pictures and called the hot-line for poachers. After about 4 transfers I gave my information and before I could finish telling what I saw he stopped me and said, "at blah blah blah intersection?" I confirmed and he said I was the 4th person to call.
That made me feel a little better, that I wasn't alone feeling like it was wrong....

I dunno, just thought I would share.... Here's one of my pictures, this don't include all of the bodies the rest are in the ditch, in the water, all along the right, and in the road further... It was a ton of birds....
