"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

This WAS my spring hatch, lol! i got these eggs off an Ebay auction Russ's Marans had - he raises all kinds of Marans - these are Cuckoos -- I love the cuckoo marans since you can sex them at hatch. They were nice big dark eggs too - he breeds for egg color.

I will be raising more of them when they get big enough & will have hatching eggs available then if you still are interested.

oops! My timing is always off, but I'm realizing every day that my timing is not the Lord's! I don't have an incubator or broodies, but would be interested in chicks when you hatch 'em. I appreciate the ability to sex the chicks as I'm having an imbalance of roos right now and don't need to fill my freezer quite yet. Where is Russ? Is he is LA also?

Russ Young is in Ohio - here's his website:

http://www.freewebs.com/norrusmarans/cuckoomarans.htm

He had 8+ cuckoo marans eggs on an Ebay auction & I recognized his name - very low starting bid & I was the only one who bid on them so I got them. I haven't seen but one other Ebay auction he did & he had raised the starting bid quite a bit. He's pretty pricey on his website. Anyway, he sent me 9 eggs & I hatched 6 - 5 girls & 1 boy. All of them have feathered feet. I couldn't be more delighted with them!

I'll be happy to hatch some for you when they old enough. That's the one thing I love about getting back into raising Welsummers and Cuckoo Marans - you can sex them at hatch.

Mornin' La-yers and BYCers too

Well the hatching is about to begin here and Red Roo Inn LOL I just got 32 Good Shepard New Hampshire eggs in the mail yesterday. I been letting 2 hens set on a some eggs, getting them all tuned up and ready to do most of the hard work for me (I'm lazy that way)+ they do such a much better job than me and a incubator do, LOL So I guess here in a bout 3 weeks I will be adding another group to the coop LOL ha! just what I need a few more chickens.

I was looking at some of my older post last evening and I found where I posted Layer feed was 9.85 a sack(in '09) and I was only feeding 55 chickens at that time (a little over 3 years ago) now feed is 13.75 a sack and I have about 555 chickens. Boy!, talk about things change, let me tell you, they sure do and not for the better either LOL no wonder I "don't have no" money any more. shewweee

Jeff,

Are you feeding dry or are you fermenting? DH and I are looking into fermenting and then supplementing with fodder or sprouts. I'm hoping that may cut the food bill.

I just hatched 16 chicks in the incubator--hoping there's a few more when I get home. I hatched lemon cuckoo orps, BBS marans, olive eggers and one SBEL(hoping that SBEL is a pullet!

). I had several small cuckoo marans eggs that died somewhere between lockdown and last night. It was depressing.

I have more eggs coming next week from Dick Horstman to put in the bator. After my cocci issues, I've lost half the flock and need to get it going again. I ordered some blue swedish ducks, too. Never had ducks--gonna give it a go, as I'd like to see if it is really true that duck eggs are better for baking. At this rate, DH can barely keep up with the coop building! At least it keeps him busy and out of trouble.

Kuntrygirl, Are you breeding any rabbits yet?
bun.gif
X2. And if you are, what kind? My granddaughter has talked me into a rabbit (bunny) and my research is that they get along fine with the chickens although I will build a separate hutch for night for the rabbit. I read on BYC that one person had his actually together, in the same coop at night. I wouldn't do that, my girls would poop on it! LOL

Kuntrygirl, Are you breeding any rabbits yet?:bun

I'm glad that you said that. I was suppose to pair them up this weekend and I forgot!!! :barnie Yes, I will be breeding. I will pair them up this weekend. I will probably breed 5 of my girls and hope they kit at least 10 each. I may do that twice this year, so that I can yield 100 babies for the year. I will be breeding the Californians and New Zealands. But what I want to try this year is cross breeding my Flemish Giant and New Zealand to see how big a rabbit I can get. I think that will be my experiment with my rabbits.

I need to weigh them this weekend as well, so I can track the weights for the year.

What ya got going over there with your rabbits Celie? :bun

Me & Jim were just now standing outside & suddenly about 200 chicadees
came flying out of our hedge - slamming into us, the carport, the
windows -- we were yelling & ducking & a young hawk burst out of the
hedge & flew the opposite direction. Jim said he guessed he didn't
realize he was hunting "fast food".

What do ya'll do with all those rabbits? do you eat them?

mbness glad your NPIP went well! i need to call & get mine renewed.

Congrats on your hatch Sandy! what's a SBEL?

I still need to hatch some Ameracaunas & RIR's & German New Hamps & BCMs......& peachicks!!! when they start laying.

I will have both peacock eggs and peachicks available for sell this year.
