"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Lost another one yersterday, down to 4 but they or all eating well. I hold them in my hand an squirt the milk out & the suck it up. lol
They look a couple days old to me, are they the ones, who's mama wasn't nursing them because she had no milk? I am glad they are doing so well! The milk problem has not been a problem for me, at least not yet, thank God! I always breed at least 2 on the same day, so if anything happened to one doe, I have the other doe for milk, even if she has to nurse in shifts. Also I find that is I would ever get a very large litter and a very small one, at the same time, say one has only 6 and the other has 14, I could take 4 from the 14 and give them to the 6, so mamas can nurse 10, but 14 is a little much! I would not sell any of these that got switch, but they would taste good at 12 weeks. Rabbits are very good at adopting other's kits. I have never had a problem with that. Do you have other rabbits besides these?
Hey yeah it was great to meet you and the crew and Terri and Jim(again) too, (I'm a poet, didn't ya'll know it)LOL

I will surely let you have first dibs on them as soon as I figure who's gonna stay and who's gonna go. I have a fairly good idea already but I got to get my organized mess a little less messy first and see what and who I got room for. I'm gonna be diminishing my production/layers bunch down quite a bit as have big buckets and buckets full of eggs(already, not even springtime yet, too) I can't move all of them here in the grand ol' metropolis of Hornbeck. LOL I wished I had time and an easier way to get them to town, I could make a small fortune off those eggs as city folks go nuts over them and pay big,big bucks for them.

good day all Oh yeah Celie the bunnies and eggs are symbols (pagan) of a new beginning/new growth (Springtime/Easter)

Jeff
Yes Jeff, the pagan goddess called Eastar, whose' followers went into the woods in the Spring right after the equinox and rolled eggs around and had orgies, like rabbits, to worship their fertility goddess and gods, for blessings of fertility, but I can't understand how Christians adopted these symbols and linked them to Christ's Crucifixion, that Passover is about? Christ became our Passover, by his death, ushering in the age of GRACE, through which we can be forgiven, when we repent for our sins?

I got my new layers in from McMurray Hatchery this morning. They all arrived intact, but the Minorcas I ordered are TINY! Hopefully they all make it, and I will have tons of fresh eggs by the end of the summer!

I also got a mystery chick in my box. He is white with a beard and yellow legs. He is the biggest chick of the bunch, and looks nothing like the EEs that I ordered. Curious to see what he turns out to be!

Yep. And at one of their events the other day they had "foraged eggs" for 5 a dozen. Free ranged?

Chickenbelle thanks for the pics! What is the difference between showgirl and silkie? Like hatchery and breeder stock?

Anyway, I am finishing the plans of the coop this week. I would love to hear everyone's input on things like bedding, etc. thanks!
Both breeds are show quality that I have. Showgirls have the naked necks--fluffy everywhere else like the silkies.

Good morning everyone! What a great weekend. Although I stayed inside in my PJs ALL DAY on Saturday, I managed to muster up enough energy to step foot outside on yesterday. The weather was nice! The chicken yard is drying up very nice. I think I can get a dump truck of sand in the yard this week if the weather remains this way.

I took a few (well maybe more than a few) pics this weekend to capture the beautiful weather.

One was that Cruz may have had an undiagnosed, rare genetic disorder, like hemophilia. But Cruz had no history of trauma or such blood disorders in his bloodline, Blue said.

Poisoning, whether intentional or not, seemed the most likely explanation. Blue declined for Cruz to have a necropsy because she was confident that he swallowed poison, she said.

Why wouldn't the owner have a necropsy performed to be sure?  :idunno

Yep. I know that I would.

Hey everyone!  Just located this thread and am happy to see so many enthusiasts in my neck of the bayou. :weee
I live in River Ridge (New Orleans suburb) and just got my first chicks about 4 weeks ago. I'm now the proud mom of 5 silkie chicks ages 9 weeks and 11 weeks.  I'm totally smitten with them! :love
I'm on a steep learning curve so look forward to words of wisdom from you experts out there as I have questions.

:welcome

Celie,

When I first got on this thread and heard the word "cull" I was shaken. I thought the thread was only about naming your chickens and playing with them. I was skipping merrily along in my naive little world totally unaware of the reality of meat and where it comes from. Then I thought: I've eaten all kinds of meats in my life. So, I went to YouTube and watched the videos of how horrible those poor chickens and cows are treated in those wholesale slaughter houses and laying houses. Then I made myself watch the humane and loving treatment of people like you. In one video on processing a chicken she holds the chicken and pets it and talks to it with its head between her knees until it is still and calm and in one second she makes the cut. Like you she appreciates its life and made sure its life was good and its death was easy. I only want to eat meat that comes from people like you.

But, I still think you are brave.
