"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Good morning everyone! Hope this post finds you all hale & hearty!! Kinda chilly around here this morning.

Wanted to show y'all my Rio Grande Turkeys. Big, beautiful things!! Was gonna sell them but decided last night to go ahead and keep them. Just couldn't part with them.

I can attest to Chris having some mighty fine-looking chickens. They look even better in person than in pictures. He also has a great set-up to keep them in that I'd love to copy.

Chris, of the 9 RIR's that I got from you, it appears that 5 are pullets and 4 are cockerels, so a perfect mix. Also appears that the two Barred Rocks are one of each. At about 10 weeks old, they are already about the size of my fully grown hatchery chickens.
That" some good news and thanks for the complement!

Evening everyone!

Chris--Terri's RR hens are doing wonderfully--at my house like she said.

Sweet girls. My roo only had one hen and need more company. The one started laying immediately on the way home and settled quickly. The darker of the two took until this week to start laying for me, but she is a CHUNK! I have no idea what that girl eats!

Not a bad experience at the show today. There was NOTHING from the Mediterranean class. The only RIRs shown were rose combed--I should've taken a couple of my straight combs. I thought our hens and roo looked better than those rose combs, but that's just me. Their roo was nice, but not as good of a stance as mine. Turned out we didn't win anything big, but each of our birds placed because no one else brought the same breeds.

My porcelain d'uccle got best variety, my 8 year old son's gold neck d'uccle got best variety and reserve breed, and I had let hubby claim the mille fleur roo--I knew he was gorgeous--sure enough he took the best variety and best of breed. Lost the feather legged bantam class to a cochin from the lady in charge of the cochin club out of Michigan. Hubby won the trophy for Best Novice Bantam. I will have to continually remind him that he won that stinkin little trophy because I allowed everyone in my family to choose who they wanted to show and I took last pick. Ha! My daughter's wyandotte cockerel of course took best of breed and best variety since he was also the only one. It was a cornish hen that won supreme today. A cochin won bantam and a large black orp won large fowl.

Overall, we had a good time. Learned a lot. Watched a lot of people who are OBSESSIVE with what they do. Some of those folks packed trunks full of stuff for prepping birds.

I don't think I'll try another show until more of my birds grow out. I have several breeds of show quality birds and by fall they should be ready. I have silver penciled rocks, silkies, showgirls, Marans, buttercups, and wyandottes that are from show lines and could grow out to do well.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable Saturday!
It's sounds like you all had a good time at the show. It's a lot of work but also a lot of fun! We might have to try and make up that way for the next one.!

here I go again learning so much from all of you, Just learned to clip beaks & toe nails oil the legs, cones when showing. Wow I can bath, groom & clip fur from face, ears & feet on a horse & get it ready for the show arena along with my now 17 year old daughter. Who has been showing her horse for the past 9 years. Can change her & the horse from English to Western to speed events in just a few minutes. Bet it would take me an hour or 2 to just trim nails & beak on 1 chicken. lol And most of all the knowledge of Pox was very interesting, and I'm going to have to get them all vaccinated for the pox as soon as possible. Thanks again for so much amazing info. oh I can call a farrier to trim the horses hoofs, don't guess they have one for the chickens

Hello Louisiana chicken people! We are new to chickens and BYC. Have 6 5-week olds. 2 Buffs, 2 Americanas, a Golden Comet and Barred Rock, all hens we hope. Live in Abita (actually in what I refer to as Talibita) and have hit the Chicken Swap at O'Keefe's the last two months. Looking for day old Lavender Orphingtons (2 pullets) within the next few weeks in an 50 mile radius of Covington. Any ideas where I may find them? Thanks in advance.

Hope it's appropriate to post this here. Just thought I might get better feedback.
So these guys should be between 3-5 weeks now. The two larger ones are about a week older than the others I think. My guess on the first one is a Delaware. Thoughts? In the second picture there are two that look identical except for the age difference. Are they production reds, or too light in color for that? The darker brown/red I have no idea. It came from the red pullet bin at the Alexandria TSC along with the younger of the light red.
Any help?

oops Twiley and Ashleigh lol

I'm so jealous! My first 4 eggs that my girls layed weren't fertile, but the one I got from you definitely is! It is showing some good development, so I'm hoping for the best! I also put 8 eggs in the incubator today. Maybe those boys will have gotten their act together by now! I'll have to get some pics of the chicks I hatched from my buff/partridge pen. I got a couple really nice babies with some nice vaults on them. I have a partridge sizzle from Chris in there with them, so I'm hoping that at least a few are sizzles
