"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hi, Everyone! Happy Easter and April Fool's Day! I've been out for a couple of days repurposing an old chicken run. Welcome to all the new thread chicken lovers. I did my very first building project. I am going to post a foto, but it is so very humble next to the beautiful things you guys do. I repurposed a chicken run that I got to attach to my chicken coop, but it was too small, so it was just hanging out rotting in the yard. I decided to make a rabbit cage because the one I got for the rabbits was SO very much too small. I could hear Julie in my ear throughout the 2 days saying to repurpose, recycle and reuse, and I did a little of all three on this little project. The run didn't have a bottom or back. I am really excited because I have always wanted to build something. I am going to build a roof, but for now I'm using a tarp. I am also going to paint it and put sides around the bottom with one side removable and throw some of those Mrs. Magoo red wigglers in there protected from the chickens. Then open it up now and then and pull out the great stuff for my plants. That's a little kid chair in the foto. It makes the cage look bigger than it is. LOL BTW, it is VERY sturdy. I planted 2 blueberries, 2 blackberries, 2 grape, and 1 fig. Already have a satsuma developing flowers. I'll also put in some veggies. julie, congrats on repurposing, reusing and recycling your brooders. LOL But where's the broody dog foto?
I love it. Great job!!! Training the dog as we speak to go broody. Will post pics when that is accomplished. :lau

Well I got home really late last night from a nightmare vacation only to get some more bad news.

My flight got delayed by almost 10 hours, so my dad volunteered to go check on all my critters for me since I wouldn't be back before midnight. He got to the property around 6:30 where everything appeared to be normal. He said my ram started bumping him and bleating at him which is unusual. He walked around back to find my last ewe due to lamb this season struggling to deliver a breech baby. He was able to help mom deliver it, but unfortunately it had already died.

He said the back legs were out but were dry, so I'm assuming it had been stuck for at least a couple hours. Thankfully he found her in time, or I may have lost her too. My dad was just as upset as I was. He said it was a beautiful little brown and white spotted lamb. I'm super disappointed

It really sucks to have a bad vacation and come home to something like this. I'm thinking about changing my name to "Murphy" because his law seems to apply way too much to me lately.

I'm hoping the rest of the week goes better than the first part. The past week has been a complete disaster!

OMG GRACIE !!!!!!!!!! I am sooooooo sorry to hear about this. :hit

I'm speechless. I don't know what to say. It is ALWAYS heartbreaking to hear of anyone losing an animal. I'm relieved to hear that the mom is ok.

Sorry to hear about your vacation as well. You will have to tell us all about it whenever you can.

Again, so sorry for losing the baby. I hope the mom will be ok. I know that she will miss her baby. :hit

I hope that you are ok and that you have a better week. :hugs

I set 7 more goose eggs in the incubator. I will put more in today and tomorrow if the girls lay more eggs. It will be a long countdown. Now I wait on the peas to start laying eggs.

I saw an incubator on sale at TSC called Pro Series that had the turners and all of the whistles and bells for $119.00. I have never heard of that. I think that I will stick to my Brinsea. Time to order another incubator.

I think that saddest thing about it was watching her look for her baby last night. She was up and moving around once I got there around midnight, but all she did was call and look for her little one

One of my girls had twins, so maybe she will be willing to share a baby with her! I'm sure the other moms would be more that happy to have a break!

I know one thing for sure. I WILL NOT let my rams run loose with the girls and pasture breed as I usually let them do. They will be kept separate until August. This should set me up for all my lambs to be born in January, and hopefully all will be on the ground within a few weeks of each other. I will also not be taking a vacation during lambing season. Not that it would have saved the baby because I would have been at work anyways, but at least then my poor dad won't be feeling guilty too.

My poor dad is SO not a country guy! He is handy in the yard and all, but he doesn't know a whole lot about livestock. He called my step-dad who talked him through everything. I'm sure the last thing he imagined doing would be fishing a dead lamb out of my ewe yesterday evening! He was very gracious about it all though! I guess they are right when they say dads will do just about anything for their girls!

I'm also pretty proud of my ram for being a good protector. He will be going to a new home in a couple weeks, but we will be holding back one of his sons. Hopefully he has a similar temperment. Even though it was a nightmare week, I guess it could always be worse! I made it back in one piece, and we were able to save the mom. Gotta look at the bright side of things!

So sad. Poor girl. Yes, your dad did everything that he could. I hope he is not taking it too hard. I wish things could have turned out better. But we do lose some everyone now and then. I hope that you are not taking it too hard by you not being there. As you said, it would have happened anyway because you would have been at work. And as you said, things could have been worse.
