"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Got wooden posts cemented in the ground over the weekend and put most of the run fence up today. But now I'm wide awake..

I think I will end up doing FF feed. Especially if I ever do meaties. Didn't realize that there couldn't be animal protein in it.
Saw you working so hard over there!

I'll be picking up the fowl pox vaccine tomorrow when I go to Petrus, so if you want to plan to vaccinate your Orps this weekend, that's when I plan to do mine.

For all of you interested in fermented feed, this is a great thread to read. Animal protein (at least fish meal) is fine if you are fermenting properly. Please post any questions on the thread. The people there are tremendously helpful!

Hey y'all. I thought I'd just say "hey" :). I'm from Louisiana and I've been lurking a bit. Just thought I'd say a quick hello and try to get to know some of my neighbors here.

I'm fairly new to raising poultry. I have inspected plenty of them, though, and worked the kill floor! I was a meat inspector for 10 years before going back to school. I am really info hungry right now!! :)

We currently just have ducks (as far as poultry goes - but have horses, donkey, dog, house cat, too). I have grown very attached to the ducks and ducklings! I am wanting to get some geese and chickens now, too. However, much to my husbands dismay! LOL. But I always win out! :) He can't help he's a "city boy".

Anyway, hello to everyone!

Welcome! :)

What colors and age Silkies do you have right now? I might be interested in getting a couple from you.
The look on your Lab's face is priceless!!!!

As of right now, I only have a three extra black silkie chicks. I do have a hen due to hatch about a dozen any day now, so I may get some more colors from that! I travel to Lafayette about once per month, so that would save you about an hours worth of drive time if you wanted to pick them up. Or I can ship them to you if you want to pay for a box and a heat pack. Send me a PM if you are interested, and we can surely work something out!

I wonder if it is possible to do fermented feed with 150 chickens? :idunno

I don't see why not....you just need a bigger container...

Ya think? How big do you think?

I would think one of those big plastic food grade barrels would work. You just need to be able to stir it twice daily...add more feed as needed to keep it going. I just started mine yesterday in a 5 gallon bucket and I bought a plastic sieve to scoop it out/drain it. Metal will corrode due to the acidity levels so make sure your bowls/feeders etc are not metal either...

Once your flock starts eating less and less feed you may be able to cut back on the amount you are mixing/adding. Just see how it goes I guess...that's what I'm doing :) trial & error!
