Wow I'm sorry I missed you to Terri!!!!

The show will be at LSU in Baton Rouge right near the football stadium. With all that we are hearing so far....this looks like it could be a really big and really nice show so mark the date on your calender.....November 9th 2013!!!! More details to follow as we get it worked out but we are leaning towards making this a double show so it will be twice as much fun!

By the way, Rhonda kicked my butt at the Jennings show!!!!!

I haven't been on in quite a while. This past weekend I attended my first ever poultry show in Jennings, LA and entered three birds: A German New Hampshire Cock bird, a White Laced Red Cornish Cockeral, and a Red Dorking Cockeral.

I wasn't sure what to expect, since I am still relatively new to evaluating poultry. Plus, my buddy Chris Herzog was going and taking his show winning Mohawk RIR and Good Shepherd Barred Rocks.

I had three GNH boys to choose from, but the oldest one was by far the widest with the best leg color so I took him: He is a VERY large guy and I call him Oden. He is from the ONLY egg that hatched from an order I purchased from a BYC member called T.E.R.

Here is a photo of him stealing food from the duck feeders earlier this spring.



It wasn't a very big show and was mostly bantams, but the fella above won the American Class and Reserve Champion Large fowl (My other two enteries won champion and reserve in the English class as well). I was very pleased with how well he did. I have hatched nearly 16 chicks out of him and my best hens so far this year and the juveniles are looking pretty good so far.

Here he is next to Chris's Barred Rock Cock bird when we cooped in at the show Saturday.

Sweet deal and glad to see one of those "orange" chickens at the top of the heap again, I think there will be more of them to come in the future of showing as this breed has surely spread in population and interest as of late.

Chris you got one-uped huh? well at least you know where the bird(or its forefathers) that beat you came from huh,LOL

The more I read about them, the more I want some bees! I want to put a big hive at the property, and a little one in my backyard.

I have a question though! Would you be mad if your neighbor had a bee hive within 20 yards of your house?

Thanks Julie....you didn't miss it...I didn't post it on here: I put it in the New Hampshire thread. Jeff imported it from there to over here. Since CatDaddy let the Cat out of the bag so to speak...here is the low down.

It was my first time showing and luckily it wasn't a very big show (the one in Jennings this past weekend): Less than 200 birds total and about 2/3 of them were bantams. I took three birds: My New Hampshire rooster, a standard White Laced Red Cornish cockeral, and a Red Dorking cockeral.

The Cornish won Champion English, the Red Dorking was Reserve Champion English. The New Hampshire won Champion American and Reserve Champion Large Fowl. Plus, I took 1st and 3rd in the colored egg show and overall 3rd place for that. Nobody, not even Chris, was more shocked than I was. You could have knocked me over with a feather.

Question for the wise, experienced among us. : Does anyone know at what age I can dust my chicks? A neighbor brought two chicks by my house that her friend couldn't care for (impulse buy at TSC for her kids that she regretted). I kept them separated for 3 days and they seemed healthy. I put them with my other 8 chicks and they all started shaking their heads. That's mites, right? I see black specks around their eyes but none around their vents. I have DE but haven't needed it for babies before as they are in brooder inside the house. My original 8 are 3 weeks old, the other two are at least 4 weeks old. Can I dust them or just put DE in with their shavings?

I don't want the head shaking to get to my older chickens outside that I could be bringing to the Baton Rouge show later this year!! (excited about that, altho don't know if we could beat those beautiful boys in the last show...)

At this point and time, sounds like you don't have a choice. Regardless of the age, you have to do something or you will end up with more of a problem. Just watch their eyes and mouth. Although you had separated them the new chicks, I would separate again at this point and remain separated for 30 days.

Do you think the DE is enough? Eyes and mouth is where the mites congregate? Should I go to towels under the chicks or stick with the shavings? Thanks!

Afternoon everyone! Busy week at work and at home with the birds.

Jeff--call when you're ready. I'll send one of my professional chicken snatchers in to get them.

Trying to get everything finalized for my trip to BR on Saturday to deliver eggs, pick up rabbits and birds--and BOTH of our vehicles are acting up.

How does this happen all at once?!? The belt on the A/C in hubby's truck starts vibrating like the pulley is loose. Replaced the belt and the pulley and the darn thing still vibrates and makes all kinds of racket! My car has also decided to begin making a mystery noise. Once I hit 35 it sounds like I'm driving a 4-wheeler down the road. It's like it's revving and not shifting gears--but it is. It's shifting just fine. Online forum suggested wheel bearings, but those seem okay. Who knows. I don't have the time to fix either before Saturday so we may be taking a rental so we don't get stranded.

If anyone in the BR area would be interested--I have 4 light sussex chicks that I still can't sex yet for sale, a 5 month old Heritage RIR cockerel, and a 7 month old gold laced wyandotte cockerel--best of breed at show. PM me if you'd like these and I will bring them with me on Saturday.

Been looking at cages for the rabbits we are getting and I'm not happy with the cheap junk heaps I'm finding in the stores. I think we'll be buying wire and making our own. Suggestions?

*sigh* My 18 year old just moved into his own place. When did I get this old? The more I think about all this mess; the more wine I drink.
