"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

At this point and time, sounds like you don't have a choice. Regardless of the age, you have to do something or you will end up with more of a problem. Just watch their eyes and mouth. Although you had separated them the new chicks, I would separate again at this point and remain separated for 30 days.

Do you think the DE is enough?  Eyes and mouth is where the mites congregate?  Should I go to towels under the chicks or stick with the shavings?  Thanks!

Sure, you can start off with DE. I'm not a big of shavings, so you may not want my opinion on those shavings. I use towels but that's just me. Others love shavings but I don't. Shavings scare me. I would sprinkle DE on the floor (shavings or towels or whatever you decide to use). Yes, you will have to get those areas but be careful. How many will you have to dust?

20 yards????????? hmmmmmmmmm. Let's just say I would be VERY "concerned".
LOL, yeah I figured that would be a problem! Think I'm just going to have to stick with one at the property

While I think DE is a great preventative, I use Sevin Dust when it sounds that bad. You want those things gone quick! I've dusted chicks that were only a few weeks old. You should be fine.

Also, be sure to separate them from your healthy birds, and dust EVERYTHING at your place. If you have a lot of area to cover then get the Sevin liquid concentrate. You can dilute it in a spray bottle or pump sprayer and go to town! Goes farther and is cheaper if you have a big area to cover. Be careful when spraying birds so you don't get it in their eyes.

Same here with the Sevin Dust.

Congrats on the show wins! Nice looking birds.

I would dust with DE--change the bedding and be sure to dust it well. I would also separate them just in case it's something more than little crawly critters.

Bees---I would love bees and would be happy if my neighbors had bees. However, my daughter is DEATHLY allergic. It isn't worth risking a life--unless you're on good terms with the neighbors and you've discussed it with them--no way. They may surprise you and be happy to have them for pollination of their own plants.

Question for the wise, experienced among us. : Does anyone know at what age I can dust my chicks?  A neighbor brought two chicks by my house that her friend couldn't care for (impulse buy at TSC for her kids that she regretted).  I kept them separated for 3 days and they seemed healthy.  I put them with my other 8 chicks and they all started shaking their heads.  That's mites, right?  I see black specks around their eyes but none around their vents.  I have DE but haven't needed it for babies before as they are in brooder inside the house.  My original 8 are 3 weeks old, the other two are at least 4 weeks old.  Can I dust them or just put DE in with their shavings?

I don't want the head shaking to get to my older chickens outside that I could be bringing to the Baton Rouge show later this year!! (excited about that, altho don't know if we could beat those beautiful boys in the last show...)

Thanks in advance!

Where do you have their brooder?
