I've helped out several. Some I did have to cull; some were perfectly fine. If they have not made progress in 24 hours, then I intervene. I tell you, the whole incubation thing is such a worry to me, I am getting some Cochins from Julie when she hatches some & letting them do the work from now on. As soon as I get the Blue Orps grown enough to go into the main pen, I'll have my grow out coop & run that I can dedicate to broodies.

Glad you had seven nice chicklets out of the hatch!
Sitting at work waiting on the vet to call so I can go home & test the chickens for the NPIP, then have the rest of the day off - to work even harder, lol - got a garden to plant & flowerbed to work up & 2 rosebushes to plant, & the herb garden needs cleaning out too!

Good luck today Terrilachicks got mine on his way here so got my fingers crossed for us both

I hear ya. It just seems like when you want one to go broody they won't. I have one cochin that my buddy gave me and she's yet to go broody. I have 2 grow out coops that I use for the broodies.

Good luck on your testing, I know everything will go smoothly and enjoy you day of gardening. I'm going to try and get my plants in the ground today too!!

Good luck on your testing Mike.

So far so good on the baby. The only reason I did it was everything around the shell was so dry. Then when I tried to pick the egg up it stuck to the carton. The only thing I can figure is the chick that hatched with the gunk hanging off hatched right by this one and maybe that's what it was.
Anyway I did it. Wasn't planning on it truthfully but hubby talked me into it!!

Barred Babies - Congratulations on your new babies. So sorry that you had a few problems. It's always heart breaking when you lose some.

lamike - Good luck on your testing. Let me know how many of your birds/ducks were tested.

TerriLaChicks - Good luck on your testing. I have to get my garden started as well. I miss all of those fresh veggies.

grambysfarm - How is your new baby? That antique flour cupboard with the flour sifter sounds tempting as far as a trade. If I have any babies left after filling my turkey orders from my waiting list, I will let you know.

Baralak - Sorry about your duck problem. I read your post in the duck section. How old is your duck with the problem? Were you able to take a pic of him? From what I read, it sounds like (what I call F.O.S. - Flip Over Syndrome). If and only if I am reading it correctly, this may be the problem. Out of my 65 ducks that hatched last year, 4 of them have had an issue similar to what you have described. They would flip over on their backs and their legs and feet were straight out and they could not get up. Is this the problem that your duck is having? If it is, I can send you a detailed treatment (physical thearpy) plan that I used and has worked successfully over the years. It's more of a neurological problem but it can be fixed. Let me know how your baby is doing.

Have a great day everyone !!!!!!!

I'm curious on something!! I know that your not supposed to help the chicks come out and such. Has anyone got to that point and actually did help one?? And what was the circumstances that you felt you needed to help them??

Thanks

Yeah,.. I admit it,..I help
roll.png

I know I shouldn't,. I believe that I will get only the strongest if I let nature take it course,..
but sometimes,. I help. If it just looks like it's tired or it pipped on the wrong side,.. I do help it out,.
Last October, I had a problem with high humidity and wet chicks,. still had a good hatch, but the last one had pipped and zipped and then just sat there for a day,.I figured it was all that humidity making it sticky,... soo I sat with tweezers and a wet cloth and peeled it out of the membrane and shell,. it took a long time cause when ya see blood ya have stop and wait. I finally got it out and it grew to be an annoying roo that is locked up in roo jail to be processed tomorrow... but I have to say,.. it's a strong healthy and beautiful bird that would had died otherwise. I don't help those that only pip and never do anything else,. We really don't want birds that aren't strong enough to get out on their own

We will be outside all weekend long,. so I am wishing everyone a" Happy National Poultry Day! " today,. in celebrating tomorrow,.. we will process two roos and work on the coop and yard and then BBQ some ,.. what else..Poultry!

Have a good weekend everyone!

High humidity & sticky chicks is exactly what happened to me - twice! I had one chick who got out on her own & wore a piece of shell almost until she got her real feathers! I just could not get it off -- but she was strong & healthy & is a nice laying hen today.

OK Mission Accomplished! & we passed w/flying colors! Best of all he brought a helper along so I had a "gate man" while I netted up my hens from the coop. He tested 5 or 6 of them, I forget how many exactly, and 1 peahen.

Now I'm off to Lowe's for mulch to finish the flower bed in back & plant 2 roses & then on to my garden.

Hey ya'll be careful outside---I just killed a young copperhead out back under the hedge!

Congrats Terrilachicks.
All done here passed with flying colors as well.An was told I had an awesome set up as well Yayyy
They tested 46 chickens ,duck and my turkeys so we all happy as can be.
