"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Quote:
I've done this a few times in the past by won't do it any more. If the chick won't hatch from the egg it's probably because there's something wrong with it and it just can't break out of the egg. Most of the times that I've helped it out, I've had to end up culling it because it was crippled. I'd rather toss the egg out than deal with a crippled chick. What I do is give the egg/chick plenty of time to hatch (an extra 2 - 3 days). If it doesn't hatch and all of the other eggs have hatched, I throw it away even if it is still peeping. It sounds cruel..., I know, But, I feel worse having to kill a hatched chick that is cripple. Normally, all chicks will hatch within a 24 - 48 hr. time period. If by the end of the time they haven't hatched chances are they won't. Depending on how many eggs you're waiting on to hatch you can adjust this time frame.

Yea I understand where your coming from. It's bad enough that you get some that come out on their with problems.

I have no intention of trying it's just something I was thinking about since everytime my husband goes to look in on them he says "Makes you just wanna go in there and help them out!"

I can't do it either. I have my cats do the dirty deed.

I hate to do it.. I only do it at night.. have the little hole dug, then do the deed.. I won't describe the method.

Well I'll tell you how I told my husband to do it. He held the little body in a paper towel and snipped off it's head. He said he was just like doing a big one same kind of reaction. He said it was just pathetic cause it was so tiny. I just couldn't do it myself!! Thank god for husbands!! I felt so bad doing it but it just couldn't make it the way it was!

I will admit to ya'll now we did help one out. Realized the one that had been zipped and still hadn't come out pipped & zipped on the small end. Told my husband we have 3 choices.

1. We can let it die in the shell
2. We can help it out and if it's messed up we'll have to cull that one too
3. We can help it out and it will be fine!

So After all the others hatched and we put them in the brooder I peeled away the top of the shell and it was completly dried out. Once I did that it started pushing it's way out and it seems perfectly fine!

So this has been a crazy hatch, from them not starting to come out till the 22nd day and the other 5 came out today the 23rd day. One with a messed up legs, one that had all that gunk hanging off of it. Which by the way is a little bully that chirps all the time. I'm holding it right now so it'll shut up. Then had the one that pipped the wrong end. I have 2 eggs left that haven't pipped yet. I'll give them till tomorrow. So out of the 9 barn yard mix we hatched 7.
