Congrats Mike. 46 tested? You got off easier than me.

I know you're glad it's all over.

Congrats, Mike & Terri! It's a relief getting this out of the way.

Copperhead! Yikes!! We have lots of them, too. As I understand, the younger copperheads are more dangerous than the adult ones because they haven't learned to assess the threat presented, and don't "control" the amount of venom released; therefore, if they bite you they will inject all of their venom in you. Whereas, if an adult bites it may inject just a little venom if it doesn't see the threat as a life or death situation. In any case, I don't want to find out.

Well, actually she's doing great! She has me puzzled about her color though. I'm still trying to determine what color she'll be. I expect her to be either gray or buff since the parents are gray and buff. However, as a gosling, she is not fitting into the normal colors that I associate for gray or buff goslings. She's much darker than my buff saddleback gosling that I hatched last year, and she's much lighter than my gray saddlebacks were as goslings. I'm communicating with the Sebastopol experts and have them helping me to determine her color. Something interesting that has come about with her color is that there is a possiblity that she may be a Blue Saddleback. Breedings between buff and grays can produce blues. Something I wasn't familiar with. Genetics are so interesting!

Here are updated pics now that she's had a chance to dry out and get fluffy. She still looks pretty rough!

Very much like a new hatchling! She's very active and is eating and drinking adequately.

On the auction, that is obscene! And, THE RESERVE IS NOT MET

I would hope that they would at least guarantee the hatch at that price! Forget the eggs, I'd be looking to buy the chicks instead --which BTW the chicks are $380 a piece for day old chicks. $1,600 for a juvenile pair. OUTRAGEOUS!!!

O gosh that gosling is the cutest thing I've ever seen! --- makes me wish I still had geese (no longer have the fences up to contain them) -- hope it is indeed a "blue goose"!

Holy guacomole Mike! 46?!!! I got off light! of course, my laying flock is only 12, so he tested 50% of them & 25% of my peas.

Yes the copperhead was a definite "WHOA"! moment - but we are doing a lot of rearranging & major trim hedges & clear out leaves in our "backyard" area so we probably are the ones that stirred him up. I'll get some mothballs to put out in case there are any more around.

We usually don't see coppers, mostly just little garter snakes & big, big rat or corn snakes around here. The moccasins stay down at the bayou, which works well for all of us. This definitely was a copper & not a corn snake -- the juvenile copper is the same orange as a corn snake, but has a bright yellow tail for about 2 inches at the end of it - which this one did have. Lucky for me, I had a shovel in my hand when I spotted it, so it was chopped up in no time flat. I won't kill the king snakes but all others - history!!!

That auction is soooo crazy--- guess that's the next big thing--chocolate orps. I'll stick to my blues - they are pretty enough for me.
