I started (2) 5 gallon buckets of watermelon wine a couple weeks ago. It was the watermelon with the orange meat inside. We'll see how that turns out. I will probably start a batch with the red meat watermelon next. I'm running out of buckets and room in my house. :/

These are todays eggs laid by the hens we got from Terri. I have always loved the variety of eggs we get. White, spotted, tan, green and ten colors of brown, lol. They are just neat.

We got rain! Yay! I was asleep in bed, running fever with a summer cold but there MUST have been some STRONG WINDS! Stuff thrown about. And I am going to need to do some repair on the chickens play yard tomorrow. Nothing serious though. It was a good trade off since my garden really needed the rain. Speaking of the garden, I planted a whole tray (13 of the 6-packs) with seeds for more veggies. Onions, leeks and more. I hope to continue getting seeds started over the next 6 weeks and hopefully I will have all my seedlings ready to go when its a bit cooler and I can plant cabbage etc.

Hubby shot 3 huge grass cap with his fishing buddy. Bow fishing. Now what are we going to do with grass carp?!

Uh, those grass carp are gross. 19lb, 20lb, and 25lb. He just was not able to get the pin bones to come out, even with pliars. So I guess I will grind it for the cats or dogs. And the compost is going to get a good dose of fish guts and skeleton.

My hubby bow fishes... Just looking at carp grosses me out. Do you usually eat them? I've never heard of anyone eating them.

Could feed the carp to the chickens....mine LOVE tuna...love it, like jump me until I drop the plate love. The bones can be risky but if your grinding it up n e ways....

I have a small pond and ample space for some ducks to roam/free range, would love to have a pair here but I'm still in the city still and fear they fly around to not to far busy roads, are there flightless ducks?

I know this is old, but thought I would answer it since it got lost in the shuffle.

Aside from Mallards and Muscovys, nearly all domestic ducks are flightless. I keep Pekins, Indian Runners, Khaki Campbells, Cayugas, Welsh Harlequin, and Silver Appleyards none of which do more than flap their wings furiously while running for a "turbo boost".

Now, since they can't fly, they do need predator proof night time housing and are susceptible to daytime attacks by predators unless they can get out onto the water in time. Perimeter fencing helps slow but doesn't stop dogs, bobcats and so forth. Buying ducks that are done with the messy brooding stage is very helpful...plus they may already be trained to coop up at night (all mine are).

Oh, and just wanted to mention to everyone, that the Gulf Coast Poultry Fanciers Association will be having our final swap for the summer this Sunday from 9-1 at the St. Tammany Parish fairgrounds in Covington. It is located off I-190 and Magee street and we are under the covered livestock arena, which stays up to 15-20 degrees cooler during the heat of the day.

Right now, we have 30 vendors signed up and have several more table spots available for $5.00 each. All proceeds benefit the club's show fund to help pay for our show November 9th at LSU.

They are gross to me. they remind me of the algea eater i have in my fish tank because of their "lips". They shoot those and gar. They usually give the gar away..some people make alligator gar balls and fry them.
