"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I think next spring will be seeing the construction of a meaty pen and my first forage into raising meat birds. One's thing for sure - I am not going to poison my family.

..."Assistant to the director of the China's National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment said that because China was “still developing” it would not be adopting international food safety standards, but rather rely on “national conditions,” according to the South China Morning Post.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a report earlier this year linking the deaths of more than 500 dogs and the sickening of up to 2,500 animals to contaminated chicken found in dog treats processed in China.
Under the new trade agreement, no inspector from the FDA will be present at the Chinese processing facilities. Because the chicken will only be processed in China, it won’t require any point-of-origin label, and consumers won’t be able to tell where their chicken has been...."
Do not even think about those 10'X10' and 2' high tractors!!! My biggest mistake in my first and only batch that I have right now. They poop so much that before I started free ranging them I had to move it every half an hour. The height makes it impossible to catch one to check on it without being covered in poop or hurting yourself, and is a nuisance when it comes to food and water. Next time I am building a hoop coop, at least then I can walk in it.

That's really scary. I'm thinking of trying to find a processer. I'll raise them but I need a deed doer like kuntrygirl. Pam

Oh there's no way I could do it myself. I would get my father-in-law to take care of the birds. He often helps friends process animals for a part of the meat. Every deer season sees his freezer filled without having to ever go hunting. I know he'd do it for a share.

Keep us informed I like learning from other people's mistakes.

Do you live by her? If so, she might help. I plan on processing myself in batches of ten. I have 51 now, I started with 57. 2 were failure to thrive in the first 2 days, and the other 4 were by a Texas rat snake at 1 1/2 weeks, needless to say he had a very good final meal. I tried to brood inside but gave up after a week and brooded outside. If you brood outside you will want hardware cloth smaller than 1" openings. Some of mine were able to fit threw the 1" openings until week 3. To keep them from leaving I put old metal roofing around the sides. I have one now called lil bit, still at week 6 the same size as a week 1 normal chick but eats the most out of the group.

no we Don't live close. But I'm on the hunt for meat for processing or money. In metarie (I'm in slidell) some one teaches a coarse on processing chickens and lamb or pigs. I 'm trying to get my friend who can't have that many chickens to take the coarse..

Wow, you are out there. There are also videos on you tube showing several different ways of doing it.

Guess your on the other side of the state. I don't want to take the coarse or u-tube lessons. I'll deal with the poop. I'm sure I'll find a deed doer sooner or later,:bow I got 2 eggs today one blue one a peachy color my other chickens lay brown even know they haven't laid yet. I hope its the easter egger. I'll try to see who is laying it tomorrow .

I have noticed that the ones that are laying have a much larger vent than the non-layers. I check on mine a little too often.

Yuppers, I am in DeRidder. I am looking to buy property in St Tammy Parrish or somewhere around there, but am having trouble finding something at a reasonable price with legal access. The one I really liked was 10 acres (9 of them cleared) with legal access for $50000. It was a really great price but sold the day after I found it. Everything else seems to need access to the propriety threw logging companies propriety's (not something I want to have to deal with), or they want half a million or better for 10 acres (can't afford that and a build).

I have been having some fly problems yesterday and today. It has been raining for 2 1/2 days and somehow the sand in my coop got wet. The window was away from the rain and I can't find a wet spot on the roof or the walls to tell how the water got in. I think the wetness is the reason for the flies as I haven't had a problem in quite some time until yesterday. I thought hanging a fly strip along the ceiling was a good thing because my highest roost is a good 2' below it and 2' to the side of it. Well...I was wrong. I went to close up the coop and found the fly strip on one side of my head hen. I had to cut a few of the smaller feathers because it just wouldn't let go. Any suggestions on the quickest way to get them out of the coop? BTW, my first thought was poultry dust or sevin. I can't find any, TSC and Walmart are both completely sold out. One of them always has something, I have never seen both sell out at the same time. I guess I am not the only one here having a problem.

Don't laugh, but I've had great luck with the vanilla scented hanging car tags. I've got several in my coop, and no flies.
