"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I have always wanted to go to New Zealand. How beautiful. Love your chicken variety. What part of Louisiana do you live in?? There are swaps around the state. We just had a lovely chicken/fowl show at LSU in November. Welcome!!

I don't actually live in Louisiana...

I live in Alabama. I originally stumbled on this thread when I was looking for something else and being drawn in by the conversations, information and stories. When I saw manuka oil being mentioned I couldn't help but comment. I also read/follow the Alabama thread, but this one is far more active.

And thank you everyone for the warm welcome.

I only have one crested cream legbar, but I really like her.  She is a great forager (leads all of the others all over their forage area), but will still come running when go to see them.  She is particularly fond of my 6 year old daughter and will do tricks for her and follow her around, but has never been mean to her or anyone else.  Unfortunately she is not laying yet - she is in the "could lay any day now" category. Every day I hope to see a blue egg, but so far no luck. I have 14 eggs ordered for sometime between now and April. The last eggs I got from this seller were BLRWs that hatched 10 out of 12.  I am hoping I can get a similar rate from the legbars.

I hope they all have similar personalities. Now I want a them even more. I hope you'll post some pic's of your hen and your first egg from her. I'd like to see your other birds too. 10 out of 12 that's good numbers. I'm not set up to hatch eggs. Bugglesmom has tried without good results she may ask what breeder? I'll have to find chicks. Thanks Pam

Well, I am convinced we have this big sign over our house that they can see. We had a stray cat show up this weekend. Long, skinny grey tiger. I look outside Sat night – I have a bed on top of one of my feed bins under the carport and a heat lamp on it for Minou, our “official” outside cat of many years. The tiger was in it & Minou was just sitting there watching – which is unusual for her & a sign to me that she recognized that this cat needed help.

So I sighed & dug out another cat bed & blanket & re-positioned the heat lamp to shine on both of them. Looked a little while later and both cats were sound asleep under their warm lamp in their respective beds. At lunch today they were still there, snugged up in their blankets. The other stray I was trying to tame down got hit by a car & killed a few weeks ago.

One leaves and another comes. Cat Karma.

I need to take some pictures of my birds. I need to take some recent pictures of my birds. I have been waiting for some nicer weather, or at least a day with a little sun and less wind. I will post them when I finally am able to get some good ones. My eggs will be coming from Hardin Poultry (www.hardinpoultry.com) in Tennessee. When I ordered my last eggs from them I found them to be great to work with. They had a cyber-Monday special that I was able to snag.

My first batch was from Chickengirl(some number or the other) from the 24 hour auctions. 0 development. None even started.

But the second time I *think* was an incubator issue. I don't understand what happened. I incubated in my brinsea and I hatch in a separate bator that's still working fine. The eggs of my own I set with them developed properly and hatched at due date, as well as the batch of mine due 1 week later but the Legbars and Isbars died past due and looking a week behind in eggtopsy though they did not die a week behind. It would be less confusing had my own eggs not developed properly. Then right after the 2nd batch that hatched on time my brinsea incubator went kaput. Lost 11 of my own eggs before I knew it was out. I don't know if its a coincidence that it failed around the same time.

Glad to hear from you! Funny the way the universe works. That this cat would move right in and your cat would act like its known it all its life. Its meant to be. Pam

I have had mixed success with my incubation. 10 of 12 was my best and 0 from 12 is my worst. With the failures, I often see development to a late stage and then they stop. The majority of the failures have been from shipped eggs that have detached air cells. For the next batch of shipped eggs that I receive I am going to try a couple of alternative techniques to see if that makes a difference. I try to get my eggs from breeders as close as possible to minimize how much time the USPS has to mess with them, but sometimes there are few choices. Our local post office doesn't make it any easier - they frequently ignore the hold instructions on the box and so the eggs get to spend a day on a ride along with our carrier, who may or may not make it to our house by the end of the day.

I incubate in a homemade incubator that has a digital thermostat, a 25W element, fan and a hovabator turner. At lockdown I transfer my eggs to a hovabator 2362 (the one with the fan) for hatching.
