"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hello fellow Louisiana chicken people,

I just moved to Gonzales La. near Baton rouge, and I am interested in starting up a new flock here. I had an assortment of 4 egg laying chickens in a very urban area in Denver for the last two years and the wife and I enjoyed them very much.

Now Im back home in Louisiana, and I have a lot more land to work with now, I would like to start another flock. This time I would like to get 5 egg layers, I do not really care what breed they are as long as they are suited for the heat and are good layers. I would also like to get around 15 meat chickens.

Anyone know of a local place that I can buy from, and by "local" I mean within a few hours drive from Baton Rouge, or do I need to go ahead and mail order them?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Jeremy

Welcome!. If these fine folks on here can't satisfy your poultry needs, you can order chicks on line. I started my flock with chicks from ideal poultry hatchery. They are a sponsor on here, but I ordered from them way before I found this great site! My chicks were all healthy and it was a good experience for me. They have many breeds on the website.

Another good resource is the Louisiana Farmer's Market Bulletin. Published by the LA Dept of Ag and Forestry. It is full of good honest farmers selling their livestock, crops, equipment, etc. Not a bunch of scammers like Craigs list... The publication is on-line, but the web version is 2 weeks older than the print version so it encourages people to buy subscription instead of just read online. If you wait for the web version, some of the stuff is already sold. The subscription is only $10/year delivered to your mailbox. Good resource for local products. Good Luck

Hey,

Thanks for the reply. I am looking for chicks.

Check out your local feed store. They usually start getting chicks in February . Any idea what breed your looking for.? A few people have show birds if your thinking of going that route. I have a Easter eggers that is my most reliable layer so far, my black australorp just started laying . She should be a good layer too. Getting started this early for chicks you could get a feed store to get what you want. Pam

I'm going to let the others guide you on this one. I got all my flock by mail (all hatchery). As I add to my flock, I will try and get them from my friends here on BYC.
