There is extra calcium in layer feed that can damage the chicks organs. Most likey Grandma didn't have actual layer feed with all the different ingredients that they have now!! When I have a mixed flock I give the Flock Raiser and just make sure I keep oyster shells free choice for my big girls!!

I agree with Missi 110%.

Missi, don't you just love the Flock Raiser? I surely do. Years ago, I used Flock Raiser before I found the feed mill that I bought feed from. Now that I don't have the feed mill option anymore, I'm back to Flock Raiser. Are you getting the Purina Coupons? Please make sure that you sign up to get them. The last Purina coupons that were sent out, you got $2.00 of any bag of Flock Raiser, Starter/Grower and Lay Pellets. Every little bit helps. Tractor Supply also has the coupon books and you get $1.00 off every bag of feed. If you don't have any coupons, let me know and I will mail you a few.

GLBRWyans, many years ago, I think that our grandparents (mine did) would only throw out corn for their chickens to eat. I doubt if they ever threw out leftovers because I'm sure that there weren't any leftovers back then because they didn't waste anything back then. Kinda makes you wanna go back to throwing just corn.

Good morning everyone. 99 degrees today !!!!!!!!!!!

I'll be putting the frozen bottles and gallons out today once it begins to get hot. The frozen gallons only lasted about 3 hours on yesterday. But that's better than nothing. I'll have to check Craigslist to see if anyone is giving away a free freezer so that I can get it to freeze a BUNCH of empty bottles and gallons at one time. Right now, I can only freeze about 10 gallons. No room in the freezers. The fans will be installed today in the coops and chicken house. I hope that helps. I'm prepared for the winter months with outside fireplaces for the animals but the summer months scare me.

Stay cool and hydrated everyone. Please drink plenty of water everyone!!!!!!!!

Mine only lasted about 3 hours too. I have the bottom rack in my freezer full of bottles & things falling off the upper shelves because I'm out of room!

My little Cocker girl Winnie has injured her left back leg again - she sprained it several months back - so we are back to crate rest & limited movement & tomorrow a trip to the vet. I'm so afraid this is going to end up surgery at LSU. She doesn't handle anesthesia well at all so we'll do everything possible to avoid it. I just hate it when they get older! She's 7 now, but my "eternal puppy" -- 14 pounds of high energy, VERY hard to keep quiet.

I tried to find some more shade cloth yesterday but Walmart didn't have any. I'm off to Academy Sports to see if they have any.

Oh noooooooooooo. Sorry to hear about Winnie. Is she the adorable little doggie that was outside running around when I went to your house to get the pea girls? She is a cutie!! How did she injure her leg? What happened? I hope she has a full recovery. I'm sending her puppy kisses and puppy vibes for a great recovery.

If you find shade cloth at Academy, please let me know.

Here is a pic of the group of guineas that I bought from a local guy. They are 2 1/2 weeks old today. They are a bunch of Nervous Nellies. They run away from EVERYTHING!

They remind me of my pheasants. My pheasants are nervous little things. They are like Mexican jumping beans. They jump straight up in the air and literally bounce up and down. After my trip next week, I'll need to build them a little coop with a flying area so that they can fly around. I'll have to put padlocks on the doors when my grandchildren are around so that they don't accidently get set free. If they ever get loose I'm sure I'll never be able to catch them. I think they are so cool!

Well I just finished up my first impacted crop surgery, and it was definitely interesting!

It was on a 3 month old BCM pullet. It looks like she at a bunch of straw that got balled up in her crop. I think a combination of this and the heat really did a number on her. She looks pretty bad right now, but hopefully she will pull through. I found her Friday afternoon and brought her inside in a dog crate. I thought the heat had gotten her. Then yesterday I noticed that her crop still was enlarged, but she looked so bad I didn't think she would make it through the night. I told myself if she pulled through until today that I would give it a shot. I really didn't want to experiment with my surgery skills on her! Long story short she is still here, looking pretty bad, but we are holding out hope on her! I gave her some antibiotics and bit of sugar water to try and perk her up. We might get lucky and she will pull though... fingers crossed!

I buy all my feed both pigeon and chicken from a feed mill in Alexandria , the place is called Petrus . I get chops , laying pellets and pigeon food all for about $10 per 50# . I buy my parrot food from a man that comes up this way every 2 months , mutt food is Kibble and Bits . Petrus sells a parrot food but I didn't like it . My wife and I eat what we can buy after the feed bill.

I don't know if they sell flock starter or not but that is where I get my chick feed also . It's an hour drive but worth the money because these local stores want to gouge a person on price . Tractor Supply sells feed ? I have seen one close to Alex but never had a reason to stop ?

I wonder if that's the same feed store that I called about feed. Do they sell in bulk or not? What are the ingredients in that $10.00 a bag feed per 50# or is it just different types of feed? I would surely be interested in that.

Yes, Tractor Supply sells feed but not as cheap as what you're paying now.
