"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Ok guys. Prim is not moulting. I gave her a close look and her feathers are broken off close to the skin in multiple places. Her crop is red. It is soft and feels normal. Her eggs are still soft. A couple of times she went in the coop with the big girls at night and I let her stay. I think they ganged up on her. I've seen them do it. She's not bleeding and has no broken skin. She's thin. I'll keep her separate, even during the day, I can put up a temp fence. If I get another RIR pullet, is there a chance it will pick on her too? Should I get a chick and spend time helping them bond? I was thinking a docile pullet. What do you think? I really love that hen.

I would get a few RIR chicks and put her in the brooder with them so they are with her from the start. Let her teach them when they go outside for the first couple of weeks after they all go in the coop in their own yard. They will learn her coop and her being the head hen. It doesn't always work out that way, but more often then not it does.

Depends on the birds really and how they live, tight quarters no range I'd be cautious but lots of room and hides, I'd think they'd do ok if they like each other. I have 4 grown hens, 7 10-12 week old chicks and 3 - 4 week old chicks, all range and coop together. But there's places for small birds to run/take cover too if needed.
There's risks if size difference is a lot tho. I have a head hen who wants babies around so I got lucky, she loves to protect any lil guy (even a mouse if the girls flush one out, doh) . But I still keep an eye on them in case of injury, even accidental.
The video on the next post shows how they get along a bit at different ages.

Just wondering. Do you keep all of the different size birds in the same pen or do you have them separated? I'm trying to figure out how to accommodate my bantams but I only have 3 and was considering putting them in with the others just kind of scared to because of them being so much smaller.

I have a RIR pullet you can try with her. There's 2 in the video at the end, they're the dark red pullet (no white tails-those others with white are red sex links)

:( oh no! Sorry to hear of the attack. Chicks are quick, darty play toys. Instinct probably overwhelmed bad bucky into Chase mode and a chick cant really take too much of a nip. Chicks have a different smell, look and size than he's used to, maybe introduce him to one in hand with someone holding collar and dog for a sniff and correction if need be (if aggression or too much excitement is shown due to chick)
Buckys lucky he's got you and not me -_-

So, regardless of my policy of always taking babies and the Mom and keeping them in a kennel, this time I did not. I thought I'd let her raise them herself.
My only Bannie hatched 10 in April, as ya'll know.
When I got up to refill my beverage at around 6 tonight, BUCKY was tossing a dead chick in the air and catching it like a ball....
Screaming i ran out, and found 3 more in the yard... he ran from me and went after another!!!
I literally almost killed this dog with my bare hands....  He didnt eat them, which I am glad about, but his teeth opened them all up....
So now, Clarice has 6 babies left...  and back to my policy I shall be doing things.

NOW, well on Mothers Day, my half Bannie half LF hen hatched 2!  But she abandoned her other eggs.  The rest hatched in the last 3 days in my bator, BUT she has 2 running around with her too. So that is two kennels.  Lord only knows what he would do to the little ones!  But she has been free ranging with them since Sunday!  Clarice and all her babies have been free ranging since First week in April!!!!
I don't know, BUCKY has never done anything before to any of them but eat eggs he would find.  Then what, he needed a play thing?
I am so awfully upset!!!

My buff brahma is my quietest and sweetest bird. "Irish" follows me around talking quietly. If you get a "friend" for Prim, look into that breed. Good luck.

That stinks! He was probably playing, but they are so fragile. Hang in there.

Talan James
1 hr

I have 1 dozen Silkie eggs available but I'll make them 75¢ off because a couple of them might be half Silkie. I know that for sure most of them are pure Silkie but idk which are. So I'll sell the dozen that I have and a couple extra eggs of choice all for $1.75. Who you wants them? Located in Montgomery, LA

So I looked on Talan James website and came across this. Nothing to do with chickens but so funny.

My life will never be the same until January 2015. :/

The extreme couponing is going great!! Thanks to everyone who has been sending coupons. I have 1 bedroom full of stuff (toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo, soap, cereal, pasta - you name it I have it). Now, I have to find metal shelves to put all of this stuff on. :/

I think I need an intervention! :(
