"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Oh my! Just gave the girls some cold spaghetti noodles as a treat to play with :lau SO hilarious! They were besides themselves, each running around with a noodle and chirping that "I've got something REALLY cool" chirp. But since everybody was doing it they were trying to chase each other too at the same time! Love those girls! Frenzied excitement are the words to best describe it.

Oh my goodness they don't make a smiley that can explain how much my tummy wants this :th

Are you teasing me or what! Wheres the recipe?!:drool

None was included in the pic I saw...but I got close,
A halved avocado, fried (could do poached egg -i just prefer butter fried ) atop a slice of salmon over the avocado (i chose raw, pictured is smoked), chopped bacon up with a lil fresh dill and cilantro, seasoned with celery salt and pepper. Was very yummy, I made a mess of it eating it tho. Next time I will slice up avocado, use the salmon as the base. Salmon/avocado/egg/bacon & seasoning.

What type of litter does everyone here use? Sand of pine shavings? I know some of y'all already answered this. Also, this feels like a dumb question but I'm super new. Does it go inside the coop and run? Or just one of them?

I like pine shavings. The best you can get at a mill it's finer than what you buy in s store. I think it's more absorbent. Went to a lecture by the chicken whisper he said sand is frowned upon by chicken dr.s that the weight of the bird combined with the force of a chicken jumping on a roost can cause tiny cuts on their feet . It can go from tiny cut to infection fast because you don't know it's their. I know a lot of peeps use it with no problems just giving info I've learned. I personally don't use it because fleas like to live in it.he also said check your flocks feet once a week. I think I told you there are no dumb questions. Lol! Pam

I use pine shavings. The big container that horse stall uses. Cheaper. $7 for 75 lbs I go deep litter. 4" to start and ever so often stir it around and dump more in the middle of the coop. No need to spread. They have a ball. I'm going to use the same plus a lot of leaves for the run. Pine needles.

Edited to add; I'll only clean it out once a year to have for my garden. Today I'm making a container for their bathing. 1/2 peat moss and 1/2 sand. I heard it does really well.

Thanks. We are putting our coop and large run on an area that is currently grassy yard. Should I kill the grass there with a tarp or something? Do I need to litter the run? I'm mostly wondering about our run, since it won't be moving. I feel kind of embarrassed asking these questions since all of you are already chicken experts and this is probably easy stuff for y'all. I have been looking at pictures of runs on here and it is really hard to tell. No one really mentions it either. I just want to do it right. :)

Doing it right is what's best for you and your lifestyle . If moving it regularly don't kill the grass. Your birds will eat the bugs and fertilize your lawn at the same time.

I have a roost in my coop, but all three hens like to lay in the pine shavings. By morning my lavender orpington is brown with poop! I had to give her a mini bath( which she enjoyed :). Anyone have any suggestions? They are 8 and 11 weeks old. Is this a behavior that will change?

Chickens like to take dust bathes. I add D earth in the spots they take the dust baths. Keeps them from getting mites etc.. I would make a spot with dirt and D earth in a place away from droppings .i would put them on the roost tonight they just might need a little push. Pam

First, you don't need to kill the grass, the chickens will do that in one day. I would put some kind of litter where the ground is bare. When it rains it will become mushy chicken mud poo. A lot here like sand, the poop sinks down when watered. I use rocks for the same reason. When it would rain I would slide all over the place. I also end up with hay and shavings mixed in just bec I am dealing with it, my rabbit hutch is in the chicken yard. In the fall I pick up bags of leaves along the street and dump them in a part of the chicken yard that had poor drainage and was kind of slimy. After a few years it has become a good area. It has all composted down and then I add more, free.

Looking for suggestions, best place to buy a larger waterer? We are going to Florida for 5 days, and I need a bigger waterer. I've seen them at TSC, but they are so expensive! We have 2 two gallon waterers plus a bunch of smaller ones. Is TSC going to be my best bet?
