"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Thanks. We are putting our coop and large run on an area that is currently grassy yard. Should I kill the grass there with a tarp or something? Do I need to litter the run? I'm mostly wondering about our run, since it won't be moving. I feel kind of embarrassed asking these questions since all of you are already chicken experts and this is probably easy stuff for y'all. I have been looking at pictures of runs on here and it is really hard to tell. No one really mentions it either. I just want to do it right. :)
I left the grass in mine, the chickens will take care of it soon enough, in fact, there is enogh sunlight in my hen house from the vetilation to keep the grass alive in there, going to let the chickens take care of that also, then it will be a poop catcher under the roosts and sand from there on out.

Looking for suggestions, best place to buy a larger waterer? We are going to Florida for 5 days, and I need a bigger waterer. I've seen them at TSC, but they are so expensive! We have 2 two gallon waterers plus a bunch of smaller ones. Is TSC going to be my best bet?

Set up a nipple or cup system attached to a 5 gallon bucket. For more birds you can use a larger bucket/drum, more buckets or set up a float system to refill the bucket as it gets low. Some TSCs carry the nipples. I have only very seen the cups online. Both are very easy to set up.

You can get a 13 gal. kitchen garbage can at wal mart for a few dollars and put a water nipple in it, afterwards, you can use it for its original purpose or to store supplys in, it depends on how many chickens you have, you could also use one of those large plastic containers with the snap lid instead of the garbage can, it does not have to be a fancy water-er, just fuctional,go to the hardware store and get a bulkhead fitting for the nipple to screw into, a bulkhead fitting goes through from the inside with a nut that screws on the male threads on the portion sticking out, this makes it water tight, then screw the nipple in the female threads, someone at the store can show you how it works

OKay guys... this girl posted this question, and i'd like to know in case I ever see it, OR if it is something i can keep from... if I'm not already. Especially since I sell my eggs.//..

I have a question I get my eggs as soon as the chickens lay them
the last couple of days when I crack some open the yolk has a grey/ black
tint to it what could be causing this it's only my bantam eggs.

At a hardware store I bought a perpetual waterer. It is red plastic and hooks up to the faucet by a hose and auto fills when the water goes down. I haven't set it up yet. I got it for summer bec I sometimes have to do their water more than once a day in summer. Hope it works. It was not expensive at all.

So, foxes are back and nabbed one of my new Buff Orps, and one of my EE hens. So, I'm using the trampoline idea for an enclosure... Wish me luck! And y'all can finally see my coop on the right, tractor trailer doors connected by 2X 6's and roofed. One day I want a pretty one! But this surely keeps all predators O U T!

Keep feeding what your feeding & doing what your doing. Her issue is most likely environmental. New food they're eating as in a seasonal plant. New bugs. (if they range) caged birds check food supply. Double check no powdery mildew or mold is in feed. But very unlikely to change to grey/black in controlled diet. This could be a number of things tho, most likely it diet related. My girls attacked these berries from the Nandina shrub (thought they all were gonna die :th ) instead the yolks turned this blue orange color for 2 days and I thought the eggs were ruined (only 6 eggs lol I only have 3 laying and one hiding them ) I caught my ameraucana mowing down on the berries and her next two eggs yolks had the orange/blue tint! I tossed them so I don't know if the taste was the same. I cut the berry shoots from the nandinas and eggs went back to bright orangish/yellow :lau but it scared me at first. I'd imagine seasonal things they get access to the gorge on cuz its plentiful and too much of anything can do funny things. Berries/flowers/certain weeds. Does she mean after boiling them? " to the nature of the grey film around the yolk of a boiled egg... [high temperature when cooking an egg] causes a chemical reaction between the yolk and the white that leaves a green film around the yolk. That film is iron sulfide, caused by iron in the yolk reacting with hydrogen sulfide in the white"

Sorry for your losses! :( I have never seen a fox around my place but I know they have to be there bc my house backs up to a swamp overflow area. I am hoping my electric net will be enough to deter them.
