"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I have created a thread and have tried to include everything a person would need to know about poults/turkeys when started off new. Please take a few minutes to read. If you still have questions, please let me know and we can talk turkey. :D

Thank you so much for the link! It was very informative. You said you wouldn't recommend anything lower than a 20% feed for my poults, and that 30% is optimal. I have a 24% chick starter, and was wondering if I fed mainly that, and gave the poults boiled egg twice a day, if the protein boost would be high enough to merit the twice daily hand feeding. Also, I buy crickets for a pet lizard of mine that I also give to my chicks as treats. Do the store bought crickets also carry diseases? I don't want to compromise the poults immune systems. Thank you in advance!

You will be good with the 24%. You don't have to do the boiled egg unless you just want do. I have given them boiled eggs before, so it won't hurt. But 24% will be fine.

For poults, I would not feed them anything other than feed until their immune system is up and running and strong. I have never fed anything except feed until they were 3 months. Then I let them venture in the yard and have fun with nature. A poult is soooooooooooo very different than a baby chick. I have seen so many people lose their poults and they had no idea why. I think if you stick to the feed and give them a lot of love and kisses (well you don't have to give the kissed but I do  - lol), they will be fine. Make sure you have a thermometer to keep a strict eye on the temps and do not let them get wet.. A wet poult is a dead poult.

Keep me posted and let me know if you have any questions. If you will be hatching or getting day old chicks, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure they are eating and drinking. They can fool you and you may think they are and they are not and they are dead in 3 days. :/

I just ordered four chicks online!! I couldn't wait any longer, and someone I know just got her chicks today and it made me want them even more haha. They should be here between June 12-14!

Thank you! I'm glad I ordered the poults with the chicks and not separately, because the chicks have helped the poults with eating and drinking. When they came in today I dipped each ones beak in water and made sure it drank, then made sure everyone located the feed. I came back a half hour later, and the poults were going to the waterer and feeder by themselves. I'll hand feed them every now and then, and the poults still have to follow the chicks' example on eating from my hand, but I think they've got the right idea. I will still be checking at least every hour and a half on them.

On a slightly different note, I absolutely love the poults! They are much different from the chicks (who are awesome in their own right.) They are very mellow, and the way they slowly examine everything is adorable.

Hey buddy, how's the white rocks doing? Hope they are thriving. I've got my incubator now and have ordered eggs for the 2nd week of June. I've been wanting some Coronation Sussex and have 8 coming and 4 Basques. The latter are like big extra friendly buff delawares. Good price so I'm just going to jump in and start. Super excited and researching as we speak.

That poultry netting you have leaning up there is good for hawks and shade, not much else, you really should use hardware clothe around this, and pull it tight, it costs more but it may save you some missery down the road

So, foxes are back and nabbed one of my new Buff Orps, and one of my EE hens. So, I'm using the trampoline idea for an enclosure... Wish me luck! And y'all can finally see my coop on the right, tractor trailer doors connected by 2X 6's and roofed. One day I want a pretty one! But this surely keeps all predators O U T!

Awww sorry to hear, I'm Lil late and I'm not Kuntry lol but at this point, through rigor and the heart not being able to pump it out of a cut as when processing as you planned, after it is skinned or plucked and cleaned out I would massage the meat thoroughly while rinsing. If the blood pooled and couagulated* you'll see small areas that look bruised. Rest it and freeze right away or cook. The excess blood can effect length of preservation but by no means makes it bad unless there was a severe mishandling of safety (left out on counter overnight could be bad). I wouldn't worry much about it if its for your own table, you know basic handling and to keep cool. The bruising if you don't like it can be massaged out often too.
Help kuntrygirl found two meaties who couldn't handle heat how can I remove blood?
