"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Okay, so life has had me extremely busy, SO HEY GUYS!!! Miss me? LOL

So, my new Orpington went broody, on the layers favorite hidden laying spot... so now only getting one egg a day! So, I moved her, and still only 3! I am at my wits end, was getting 12-16 ,per day before she went broody, and the spot is open now, so WTH?????

Good deal, glad you are paying attention and applying fix's, like I said in an earlier post, you are going to be a good chicken mother, my concern was that if the floor was getting that hot, what was happening to your chicks

The floor was hot because of the angle of the lamp. I am using a dog kennel and I had the lamp clipped to the top of the door, so it was on the outside and pointed at a downward angle. I did buy new bulbs today, but they were not hot enough. I went back to the original lamp and put it farther away. They are happy little chicks now! Other than the pasting up.

I have been watching them so close because I'm terrified of losing one! It is like I have a newborn (human) all over again!
(My youngest is only 7 months old, so the feelings were still pretty fresh anyway.)

Do you maybe have another broody hiding somewhere else??? Sneaky, sneaky!

I understand your struggle. It took us a few times of having chicks to get a routine down. We ended up getting to where we did our light this way.........We use the same kind as you are. But we hang it straight above on half of the brooder. Our trick is that we use a very light weight chain and look that through the clamp. Then the chain is secured together with a screw together C shaped thingy and that is hooked on another light chain that is hanging from above. I don't know if I explained that very well. But essentially it enables us to adjust the light/heat as they get older by just raising or lowering the light. We also found that since we live in such a volatile climate where sometimes we go from 30 to 70F in the blink of an eye we can raise the light even if it gets hot outside, which translates to more heat being in the brooder.

As you do this more and more you will get your own little routine down that works for you and the location of your brooder.

Anyway it sounds like you are being a great fluffy butt Mom!!! Keep up the good work

I found another source for poultry supplies. They have nestbox liners for a much better price than FarmTec and I needed more. I had only ordered a few so we could try them out to see if we like them. And we do.

That is the page for the nest box liners. But they have LOTS of other stuff in many different categories. I also got some Nutri Drench, it will be great to have around if anyone has any problems, broody, molting etc.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! This is very exciting. Even my husband is getting into it!! He watches them forever and doesn't stop talking about how cute they are. He bought a little chick stuffed animal and put it on top of the brooder (so people know where the chickens are... in case they couldn't figure it out...) We will be getting a replacement for the lost EE, and he wants to name it. He wants to call her Slayer. Sigggghhhhhh. At least he is into it too now, though!! Maybe I can convince him to go with "Slayerella" or something? hahaha

Lol, I think Slayer is a funny name! I like getting creative with our chicken names. Some people think we are nuts. My daughter has started calling one of the younger pullets "Nimrod". She says she is not that bright, because sometimes she acts nutty. Haha! I think the chicken is just young and silly, like my kid.

@LemonMeringue I live in Lake Charles, La. I have been raising chickens and such for the past few years. I just got an order of White Plymouth Rock chicks from Cackle hatchery1 1/2 weeks ago. they are doing good except for the usual mishaps that go with hatchery birds. I am looking to get a few more to raise with them. Do you happen to have any hatching eggs for sale by chance? Or maybe a pair of grown birds?

Thanks!

P.s. I have some geese a couple of months old if you need any of those:) Chinese and roman tufted.

No, sorry, I only have hens. The only pair I have is bantam Cochin. So any others that I hatch are mixed. We are hatching out some bantams that are hopefully

Sizzles. Eekkk, they are so cute! And hatching some mixed ones that are going to be for chicken dinners.

We are hoping to get a full size rooster sometime before fall, but not sure when he is coming.
